We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiera Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiera, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
This may sound cliche but the way to be successful is with hard work and dedication. I learned the hard way that it’s not that things aren’t working, it’s that you aren’t. It can be easy to blame the world and others for your downfall but if you don’t put in the work then you won’t see any results. There’s also different levels of success. Once I hit a point where I feel successful I start looking at what I need to do to get to the next level. So I guess the real key to being successful is never hitting a brick wall when it comes to looking at levels of success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Tiera Deniell and I am a singer/songwriter from Houston, TX. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. Starting in the church choir, to voice lessons in middle school, being the Secretary in my high school choir, and being in 2 choirs in my undergraduate years at Texas State University. Music has always been apart of me and my life but it took me a while to know that I wanted to seriously pursue music. I make R&B music but I also sing and write other genres. Something I think that sets me apart from other artist is that I like to dabble in other genres whether I am writing or just doing a cover. I am proud of myself as an artist for coming out of my shell and showcasing my feelings and talents to the world. Every time I release music I want my fan base to hear the emotions and growth in my music.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first got into my music career I was in my junior year of college and I was always busy. I was working on campus, active in 5 organizations, on 3 executive boards, and still finding time to record music, videos, and content and traveling to Austin every other day for shows. At times it was super hard to juggle my busy schedule and I was always tired. I started not taking care of myself and my body so I was burning out all the time and was sick every other week. Over the years I’ve learned how to manage my time and set aside some personal time to make sure I get the opportunity to relax. Having ample time to regroup and gather myself helps my creative process and makes everything I do more efficient.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am not a fan of social media at all but if you’ve followed me for the past year then you know I am always on there. Nowadays social media is one of the leading ways to promote yourself and business because the amount of people you can reach is infinite. Especially if you’re using resources like boost or promotions to help your post be seen by people who don’t follow you. The best advice I can give anyone trying to gain a social media presence is to be consistent and not just on instagram but on all platforms. Another big thing would be to interact with your followers post and they might return the favor to you, especially if it’s another creative. My last piece of advice would be to be yourself and show personality. I think that Tik Tok is so popular these days because the people who go viral are being their authentic selves and being genuinely funny and not forcing content that doesn’t work for them.
