We recently connected with Tiena Gwin and have shared our conversation below.

Tiena , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?

I believed that if you would create beautiful, well-made products, I would be successful. That is not the case. It takes more to running a business than just great products.

Tiena , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Tiena Gwin, who is the founder and designer, for the eponymous label, T I E N A. I have been sketching since I was a child, however, I didn’t learn how to make clothes until about 15 years ago. Designing has been a life long dream. And I feel very fortunate to be in this space. Currently, I am designing women’s apparel and handbags. I am currently designing for the sophisticated woman who is cultured, has a high taste level, and has a keen eye for design. And I believe that is what sets me apart. What I am most proud of is seeing my designs come to life. Knowing that this was a vision in my mind’s eye that has come to life, and its like, wow, I did that and believing that it actually came from me.
What I would like followers to know that it is truly a process to go from idea to a finished product and that fashion is really hard work.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

My business has been completely self-funded. Over the years, I have bought really good used equipment, and have worked a job to fund my business.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being a designer is the freedom to create. Since, my business is self-funded, I don’t have to adhere to other inputs on designs. I am able to make decisions regarding what pieces, I will have made without having to satisfy an investors interests.
