We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tidra Morris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tidra below.
Tidra, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Vacations and being a Business Owner is a must. As business owners we tend to become robots and resort to not having time for anything but our business. We make that our first priority, and block out what we need as individuals. A reset mind can always think clear and make better choices, then a mental that’s always cluttered and never take breaks.
Tidra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Young Black Female Entrepreneur I own a Barbershop as Well as a Restaurant about 15 min south of the Airport in Riverdale Ga. I got into the hair industry during Covid to be exact( weird time huh). I was working for a company in Suwannee Ga at the time I lived further out so it was an 1 hour and 30 min commute one way. As you can imagine that gets heavy 5 days a week, I have always wanted to own a barbershop so around that time, I prayed and asked God on my way to work what is it that you have for me because I know it’s not just for me to work a 9-5 and not be happy. At that point in life I was just existing and not living. I ended up looking for shops online that was selling because again it was during Covid. I found one I went to the location talked to the owner and I been where I am ever since. My idea and goal of having a barbershop wasn’t to actually cut hair but everyone walked out during Covid and that left me alone. Me not being a person to give up, I would cut hair with YouTube in my ear giving me step by step instructions, I would go home watch 360 jeezy, call 2 of my Good friends 1 who owned a shop of his own and the other who had been cutting for years, I would have them walk me through it nobody knew what I was doing but me but I could not quit and I was going to just let something I prayed for and asked God for go so easy because it got hard. My restaurant comes a little bit more easier I grew up around it. So I know a lot of ends and outs when it comes to that, it’s a natural thing.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
That’s A funny question, I would cut hair in the earlier part of the week, on the weekends I would BBQ on my pull behind grill. After awhile I started getting regular clientele for food. People started asking me to cater, or pull up to events with my grill and cook. Well now I have a brick and mortar restaurant (Cafe Hot Wings).
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My best advice or biggest advice no matter what industry you’re in, Great communication among everyone. A great leader has to be able to listen to your teams ideas, suggestions, and sometimes their problems. Realizing without a team there is no business. One man can only run a show for so long until he burns out, but a team can help holding the weigh of each other.
