We recently connected with Ticara Devone and have shared our conversation below.
Ticara, appreciate you joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I were to start over today, I would jump right into creating the video content that I consumed daily. All I did every single day was watch YouTube but I was too afraid that I wouldn’t do well on the platform. I didn’t know how “to start”, when in reality all I had to do was just do it. I thought I didn’t have all the tools or the perfect set up, I waited for years to start. I finally got around to doing it in 2020, during the pandemic I had the courage to try something different and a whole new world opened up for me once I stepped out on faith. 2020, was a life changing year for me in several ways. While I wasn’t happy with the state of the world we experienced during this time, it truly motivated me to just try something new.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Being from Chicago, it was only right that you had a fresh pair of kicks going back to school. It was a big deal and my mom and grandma made sure I had some fresh sneakers. My sneakers of choice was always the Nike Air Force 1 Low ‘White’ or an Air Max 90 ‘White.’ I kept a pair of those in my collection, I got heavy into Jordan Brand in 2003/2004 and I knew the drops were happening on Saturdays. So I would beg my grandmother to take me to Footlocker to get the releases on the weekend. I would say my start in the sneaker industry had already began without me realizing it. I never thought it would have been a career choice for me because I didn’t see much of that around me. I just knew I loved music and I liked shoes. I was able to combine those two together and it’s been such a beautiful experience.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to show young women and those that look like me that there is no particular career path that you have to chose in life. You don’t have to go to the traditional route to be successful and do what you love. I started as Business Administration Major in college and knew that’s not what I wanted to do. I transferred schools and started studying something I was passionate about. I realized quite quickly that I have the power to choose the life and career that I want. The parts that I can control, I controlled them. Once, I realized what I needed to do to get where I needed to be, I started to chose the jobs more carefully. Did it benefit me in my side hustle? What could I learn from a company that I’m currently working for and apply it to my passion?
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I paid a little more attention in my marketing classes. If I did that, wow, I would of been a force to reckon with a little earlier on. But, things change, and what I would have learned then would still be great fundamentals of marketing but I would have been still learning new skills because the world changes.
