We recently connected with Tiara Wiley-King and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Oh wow. The best advice I have ever given to a client? Well. I mainly treat women in my practice, and as a woman myself, we are so hard on ourselves- wanting to be the perfect mom, wife, friend, daughter, and employee. Add on our physical appearance. We look in the mirror and see things we are not happy with and want to change. This is where I come in, but I also let them know that no matter what we do, we will never have the ideal body or be perfect. I can help them lose weight and inches, and tighten and firm up their skin or wrinkles, but I also let them know we all have imperfections and IT IS OK! I am one of their biggest cheerleaders, if they lose one pound versus ten, I let them know THIS IS PROGRESS YA’LL! It is okay for progress to be slow. It is okay for us to be in this thing together. I take pictures, report their weights, and show them their progress. As long as they show up, I will too. That’s our mantra.

Tiara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey Yall! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Tiara Wiley-King, a Certified Nurse Practitioner specializing in Adult-Gerontology/Primary care, now working in wound care twice a week when I am not at my business, which I named a mini medispa- Vis Ta Vie Wellness and Spa. I can treat ages 13 and above, but my business caters to adults 18 and up. Initially, my business was geared towards yoga, so if you hear or see me called Black Yoga Chic (which is trademarked), this is because it was my initial goal. I like to say I accidentally stumbled in the body contouring industry, but I believe it was what I needed to give myself the confidence to begin my business. My brother died in August 2020, in the middle of the COVID pandemic, and my job at the time asked me to come back to work because they didn’t have coverage for my patients. That’s when I knew I had to work for myself. I started looking for business names, and I love to be different, my brother would always say live your life because it is what it is, so I wanted to Live My Life, but it had to be a little fancy, lol. So Vis Ta Vie Is French for live your life, which is what I want my clients to do as well as myself. My business is catered to the educated man or woman or non-binary (I don’t care- I treat everyone the same!)- who wants to work on their weight body or confidence, holistically. I am a nurse practitioner, and I take my career seriously. I also take what my clients want and need seriously. This is a one-stop shop- and If I cannot help you I have connections everywhere that can help you! I have an RN who assists with IV Hydration on the weekends. We offer noninvasive and minimally invasive body contouring, IV hydration, some facial aesthetics, medication-assisted weight loss, and so much more! I am the most down-to-earth NP, my clients nicknamed me “#yourfavoriteNP” because I will make you laugh, and make you feel comfortable, and at home. This is not a stuffy office. I want you to feel at home and comfortable with me. I am most of proud of my clients. They have lost inches and over 300+ pounds so far with us at the spot! I love it here!

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being personable and relatable is very helpful. You have to be able to relate to your clients. What do you have in common with them? How can you make them feel comfortable with you? If they feel comfortable with you they will share their struggles, personal problems, and anything that can hinder their progress with you. You must be trustworthy so they can understand whatever happens at Vis Ta Vie STAYS at Vis Ta Vie. I take HIPAA seriously. In order for you to obtain the success you want for your clients you have to get to the root of the problem, which is the holistic stance I speak about.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers- is a favorite of mine. I took a road trip to Georgia and listened to it on Audible and it really changed how I think about what I deserved as a minority business owner, stopping the self-sabotage, and really going for what I wanted. I have a mentor, Sabrina Lee who has been instrumental in my spa business. My first mentor, Felecia Vandestrand was the one that kicked me in the behind, putting me into gear. I have watched both of these black women soar in their own way in the entrepreneurial world and they have both helped me immensely. I am in various spa groups, obtained business besties in different states to bounce ideas off of, and collaborated with other professionals with different business ideas so I can get my name out there. It is all about who you know first, then what you know. I have other books as well that I listen to or read on Kindle, such as The Psychology of Selling and Persuasion, You Are a Bad Ass at Making Monday, and Superfans. It is interesting to see different business perspectives and compare, and see which one fits your business.
