Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiara Powers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tiara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was working my 9-5 and hated it. It was a call center job and it really took a mental toll on me daily. I was about to get married and really felt like I was walking in to a new chapter of my life so what if I could start a new chapter in my career as well? I had already went to beauty school years before and been practicing doing makeup. I was just scared to pursue it seriously. I got married and started a new job the Monday after the wedding. This job would give me set hours to really dedicate time to building my clients. Eventually I left that job when I could no longer handle doing both and now I’m a full time makeup artist!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Tiara, most people call me T. I am a makeup artist that specializes in special event makeup for women of all ages and complexions, most commonly bridal. I also work with celebrity clients Which allows me to travel around the world doing makeup as well. With that being said, I’m never too busy for my clients who come to me for all kinds of events like birthdays, photoshoots, etc. I enjoy every aspect of where my craft takes me!
To give a little back story, I went to beauty school and received my Esthetician license in 2014, I went to school just to learn how to take care of my skin and apply makeup on myself originally. I never thought I could actually make a career out of it. I would practice on myself and family but I didn’t start promoting myself as an actual makeup artist until around 2016. My love for makeup grew the more I did it. It seems cliche but I truly felt joy from doing someone’s makeup and handing them the mirror and seeing the happily surprised reaction on their face. I wanted that feeling everyday!
Now that I have been doing makeup for several years now, so many experiences have solidified that I made the right choice in making makeup my career. I take a lot of pride in my craft and my business. I try and operate by
Certain ethics because I know ultimately doing great makeup is not the only thing my clients need from me. They are looking for a positive personality, professionalism, and integrity, to name a few things. I believe having all these things on top of my craft has helped me maintain and continuously grow a pretty solid clientele.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started taking my makeup career seriously, I was working a full time job. I was determined to give as much time as possible to potential clients so I would open my schedule for all hours outside of my FT job schedule and sleeping hours. So for example I would work at the salon from 6-8am and be at work by 9a, get off by 6p and go back to the salon until 8p mon-fri then work 7a-8p on Saturdays and Sundays. I was EXHAUSTED! But it paid off.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has changed so many times since I’ve started my journey as a makeup artist. Different experiences have changed the direction I desire to go in. At this point in my journey, I would love to become a premier traveling artist, traveling around the world doing weddings and with my clients. I do that now but on a smaller scale and not as often as I would like. I love to travel so getting to do both of those things in my career would be amazing!
