We recently connected with Tiara LaNiece and have shared our conversation below.
Tiara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
As a creative person I always wanted to run my own business. I learned a lot of skills working for a company (when I started) that only had 15 store locations. I watched (worked) as they grew to now 250+ store locations. They were focused a specific client/customer in a specific community. Watching the company incorporate the elements of the community in their branding, marketing and promotions gave me insight on how to run a business. Working within the company for so many years also pushed me to start my business. As a business owner the weight of owning and running a business makes me appreciate those days and that’s why I still continue to partner with businesses and corporations but as a sub contractor because what they offer is unique and my services is a positive add on!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first started in the industry as an employee of a major urban footwear brand. People ask me (at work) if I was a model and that I should try it out. I later took the advice by doing promotional photo shoots for local brands and the company I was working for at the time. Being the modeling industry introduced to many people in the field and I was later signed by an agency. The agency put me in rooms, clubs and board rooms that offered me deals that were to me major at the time. I was still building my name but people would always experience me and see something in me, that I sometimes didn’t see in myself. I begin hosting events as a model and MC, which I didn’t see me doing because there so many people watching.(lol) I’m an introvert outside of my profession. I then took MC’ing serious and became a rapper. All of these elements offered not only me but the people different parts of personality. I was then introduced to radio broadcasting with no experience in media or communications. All of these parts of me were basically ’self taught’ ventures. No schooling or past experience. I learned a great deal of discipline from that alone because those who had experience were sometimes booked for the job before I was considered, which is understandable. I had to learn that it wasn’t my turn yet. They had put in time, whether it was in school or in the field. With that being said my first on-air radio break was trash! (lol) I thought because I heard others do it I had the science down but I didn’t! Now 13yrs later, I’m ready and polished! While hosting events as a MC, I used to watch the Deejays mix and thought (yet again…lol) “I can do that”! I’ve now been DJ’n for 7+ years. I focus most of time on curating my playlist for my clients special events. Whether it’s a birthday party, wedding, corporate or community event. Me being a student of the game (no matter the field) helped me understand that my superpower, which is understanding the mission for each job sets me apart. I’m not that there to just play music or what same would say “push buttons”, it’s to create an experience that makes each celebration grand! I pride myself in that alone! You give me the plan/idea, I’ll work it and add my extra sparkles.
