We were lucky to catch up with Tiara Cobbs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tiara , appreciate you joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
I truly believe in playing as hard as you work ! I fell in love with traveling during my 8 years as a flight attendant . Now that I am a full time business owner when I have a block of days off a take full advantage of those days with a quick vacation . My goal is to take a big trip every quarter to reset and prepare for the next quarter .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started working at the age of 13 , and of course back then I never thought much about working for somebody else . All I knew was that if I worked I received a paycheck which I could use to buy whatever my young self wanted to buy .
I didn’t grow up around business owners , and truly never understood what it meant to be me entrepreneur until I moved to Charlotte in 2018 . Being surrounded by people that wake up everyday and work hard for themselves was truly inspiring ; it was in those moments that I wanted to find my passion and let it work for me .
In 2018 I was five years into my career as a flight attendant at American Airlines , although it made me happy and I wasn’t completely fulfilled . I found myself constantly jotting down ideas of businesses to start from food trucks to home cleaning services , but I wasn’t sold .
One day at my appointment with Whitney Elise Beauty my business idea bloomed . She complimented my eyebrows and asked me if I ever thought of doing permanent makeup . I literally had no idea what she was talking about . I immediately began to do my research , day in and day out it was all about this business . I found an instructor , a business name , a logo artist . All the ideas and the vision I had was invigorating .
I never noticed the obsession I had with eyebrows until my appointment with Whitney that day . I started filling in my brows in high school – thin & uneven , I had no idea what I was doing then ; but I kept doing my brows even with the negative remarks from peers .
After 8 years with American Airlines , I finally hung up my wings in January 2022 to pursue my business full time . Being a full time business owner is the best decision I could have made .
Growth comes with time , and success happens when you don’t give up . I went from filling in my eyebrows with a hair store pencil to changing the lives of women with permanent makeup .
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Ironically , the best source of new clients for my business comes from my current clients . Word of mouth , and having my clients be walking billboards for future clients is the best advertisement . The second best source of course is social media ; instagram and facebook are both very useful tools to generate new clientele .
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I have always been an extreme saver . I took money from my savings to get my business up and running ; I still considered it a loan from myself to myself and made sure to pay it back . It’s been a few years now and by having conversations with other successful business owners , reading , and funny enough social media I have learned a lot about business credit , business funding and much much more .
