We were lucky to catch up with Tianyi Wang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tianyi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I absolutely happy as an artist. It’s a passion that brings me immense happiness and fulfillment. While I acknowledge that a regular job might offer stability, I believe that the freedom to express myself artistically and capture the world through my lens is incredibly rewarding. I’m committed to pursuing this creative path throughout my life because it’s not just a job to me; it’s my calling and my way of connecting with the world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Tianyi Wang. People always call me T, T as together. and my journey into the world of cinematography been a lifelong passion that has shaped my artistic identity. From an early age, I was captivated by the power of visual storytelling and the magic of capturing moments in time.
My journey into this industry began when I picked up my first Canon 5D mark II camera and started experimenting with some daily life shots . The streets, the people, the sky and the ocean, everything around me became my canvas, and I fell in love with the raw, unfiltered beauty of everyday life. This passion eventually led me to pursue formal education in film-making, honing my skills in cinematography.
Today, I offer a range of creative services that include cinematography for films, documentaries, and commercials, as well as street photography projects that document the world as I see it. Through my lens, I aim to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and provide viewers with a fresh perspective on the world around them.
What sets me apart from others is my commitment to authenticity. I believe in capturing the genuine essence of a moment, whether it’s a cinematic scene or a candid street photograph. I focus on telling stories that resonate deeply with my audience, sparking a connection between the visual and the emotional.
One of my proudest achievements is my first feature film <Under the burning sun>. This project allowed me to push creative boundaries and make a meaningful impact through my work. It’s a testament to the dedication and passion I pour into every project I undertake.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work is more than just visuals; it’s a reflection of the human experience. Through my lens, I aim to create art that not only captures moments but also stirs emotions and ignites conversations. I invite you to join me on this artistic journey, where we explore the world’s beauty, depth, and complexity together.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Masters of Light Conversations with Contemporary Cinematographers by by Dennis Schaefer and Larry Salvato. This is the experience sharing of some light and shadow masters. It is not only the masters’ experience sharing of cinematography. What fascinates me is their unique views on film emotions and different shaping methods of light and shadow. Some are very hazy and poetic, and some are very simple but great. A good industry Bible.
Another predecessor who influenced my image creation was Saul Leiter, who was born in Pittsburgh but spent most of his life in New York. Therefore, most of the works have the light and shadow techniques of post-impression painting, which are pure, quiet and poetic. He likes to explore the complex relationship between people and architecture, people and people, and people and weather. Use segmented pictures and precise graphics to shape unique rhythms and levels. In the mirror, in the reflection of the glass; in the shadow, in the edge of the outline; in the reflected space, in the blurred boundaries; in many details that you and I have never been careful of, photographer Saul Leiter can find ambiguous beauty in it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As a cinematographer, my mission is to capture the essence of stories and emotions through the lens of a camera. My goal is to convey narratives, evoke feelings, and create immersive visual experiences that resonate with audiences. I believe in the power of cinematography to transcend language and cultural barriers, connecting people through the universal language of imagery.
My journey is driven by the pursuit of excellence in every frame, the mastery of light and composition, and the continuous exploration of new techniques and technologies. I aim to collaborate with storytellers, directors, and fellow artists to bring their visions to life, while also infusing my unique perspective and creativity into each project.
Ultimately, my mission is to contribute to the art of filmmaking, Restore the images of each story..
