We recently connected with Tiana Marcano and have shared our conversation below.
Tiana , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the biggest trends that I’ve been seeing within the Fashion Industry; that I’ve been surprised by but ecstatic about is people having a want for more conscious fashion. It started a bit back in 2022 where I noticed a lot of emerging handbag designers utilizing alternative leather and creating sustainable brands. Which I was super stooked about since I remember back when I was taking Fashion Design classes the idea of alternative leather wasn’t really there or a part of industry standard as I’ve been told many times during that time period. I noticed that the desire for conscious fashion started with handbags and then I began to see it expand more to ready to wear pieces where instead of only 5 fashion companies producing sustainable pieces it then became 10, then 20, and so on. Sustainability has become a major trend as of today that the sustainable fashion market size was valued at 8.1 billion as of this year. So I noticed this shift within the industry where people have a desire to have a more conscious relationship with Fashion. Apparel companies are currently fulfilling this need but I noticed that there wasn’t a market for conscious fashion within the Fashion Styling realm. This is where my company comes into play fulfilling this need for more conscious & holistic Fashion stylist that not only assist individuals with building a fulfilling and appealing wardrobe but to educate individuals on why certain garments enhance their natural beauty and creating outfits that won’t be thrown out within 6 months to a year but will last a really long time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Yes of course I can! I always had a natural affinity for Styling. I was constantly styling my friend’s throughout middle school and high school. It was kind of weird because I was constantly being asked what they should wear and I would always respond saying whatever you want to wear whatever you feel comfortable with. I have gotten a couple of times back in High school that I should consider Fashion Styling but it wasn’t something that I was focused on at the time since I was more focused on Fashion design since I went to the High School of Fashion Industries. The years went on and the pandemic happened and it made me refocus on building on projects I wanted to expand on but didn’t necessarily have the time for until now. I studied through London College of Fashion for Fashion Styling to really harmonise my styling ability with the professional industry standard for styling. When I finished my studies I started up Tiana Marcano Style. I was in the process of building my portfolio within the Fashion Industry through test shoots, editorial work, and advertising work. As of recently I’ve been branching out more into providing services that are in alignment with the sustainable Fashion Market. I originally wanted to provide services like this when I first started Tiana Marcano Style but I was advised to start in the industry as a stylist working for publications, models, agencies, etc. within this year I felt the shift that it was time to expand my services that was more in alignment with my values and what I want to bring within the industry. So I shifted Tiana Marcano Style, to a holistic styling company with a focus on enhancing one’s natural beauty, empowering individuals to be self-sufficient with their image & personal style, and assisting with eliminating post-consumer waste through educating individuals on how to build their capsule wardrobe that will last them a lifetime. The services I will be providing within the new year are Seasonal Colour analysis, Classes regarding how to build your capsule wardrobe in the most efficient manner, and events that discuss the importance of not only the stylist but us the people developing a more conscious relationship with Fashion in order to decrease post consumer waste. I’ve been thrilled to make this shift especially since there’s a demand for more conscious fashion and a lack of conscious Fashion Stylists in the industry.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes there definitely is a mission driving this brand. Our mission at Tiana Marcano Style is here to pave the way in assisting our home our planet through the angle of styling while preserving a luxurious essence. We are doing so through providing services such as seasonal colour analysis. This is a service based on a method in which the stylist analyzes an individuals features such as skin tone pertaining to their overtone & undertone, hair color, eye color, and lip color to determine their contrast levels, tone (warm or cool), and chroma (if they are bright or muted in appearance). Once this is analyzed the individual falls into a colour season and more specifically a sub season of that where we create a personalized colour palette for that individual. Seasonal colour analysis is a major factor in reducing the negative environmental impact that fast fashion or fashion has had for decades. If people received more Seasonal colour analysis reports it will reduce the negative environmental impact that Fashion has had on the environment since people will build wardrobes that make them feel fulfilled in how they appear physically which means they are less likely to throw away their clothes or give them away and keep their clothes for a long period of time. Also if their wardrobe capsule is all within their color season it makes mix and matching very seamless meaning every garment will be utilized more for outfit building. We are also providing elevate your look courses within the new year which will be courses that fine tune an individuals style through educating them on which handbags, accessories and shoes fit best with their personal style along with which garments to choose for your body type. Within the new year we will also expand more into providing in person events such as clothing swap events and panels to educate and discuss how each of us can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Yes of course I can, At first when I started Tiana Marcano Style I thought my main concern would be competition in the business and figuring out what set me apart from other stylists. When in actuality my near death moments for my business happened through me being challenged by my mentors, elders, and newcomers who were attacking my light despite the fact that they were successful individuals themselves. I came to this harsh realization that they wanted to destroy and exploit me. Naturally you talk yourself out of it but their actions towards me were perpetuating this realization. The main thing I learned from this was that I should never take my light for granted, jealousy & hatred is a thing and they would go as far as taking me to court which was my near death moment for my business. People’s darkness made me more aware of my light and I realized my way of thinking is a gift and made me want to become that mentor that I needed for myself but for others.
