We were lucky to catch up with Tiana Marcano recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tiana , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning the craft isn’t an easy thing. It takes Practice, Persistence and Desire to learn the craft. Even if you have the natural ability and talent within your line of work. You still need to be a master at it which takes those things i discussed about to want to further develop. For modeling I was always photogenic from a really young age. I do believe that my mom constantly taking photos of me since I was born made me highly comfortable with the camera and have that natural grace. I understood that, that alone wasn’t going to make me an astonishing model. I had to constantly practice my poses, runway walk, and how I portray a certain emotion on camera, etc. I would study models that I was inspired from and tailored that aspect of them to me. For instance I love Yasmin wijnaldum’s runway walk but I don’t have the body type to make my hips move the way her hips move on the runway. So I tailored it in a way where there is hip movement but in a more graceful manner for me. For acting I studied a lot of human behavior and the different types of emotions an individual can express. I remember I read this book which was literally an encyclopedia of human emotions and it went very in detail about what each emotion is and where it can stem from. It was quite a fascinating book that definitely helped with my acting career. Lastly, I had a huge desire to want to be an astonishing model and actress which pushed me to develop my talent which is something you need because without the desire there will be no motivation to want to perfect the craft.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m an American Model, Actress and Fashion Stylist. I’m not just a model, I’m also a channeler, exuding ethereal surrealism through my modeling work. Within Fashion styling I create harmony between the individual’s personality and the project’s theme. As an actress, I infuse each role with a spark of soulfulness. My journey into the fashion industry began in 2018 when I signed on with EMG Models, an agency that, at the time, exclusively housed models 5’7 and above. From my initial work with Seventeen Magazine, Rollie Nation, Vanity Teen Magazine and Vulkan Magazine, I have risen through the ranks to work with emerging luxury brands and walk the runway at New York Fashion Week. I had my debut at NYFW Spring/Summer 2023 for designers House of Arti and Lexlo which marked a pivotal moment in my career and the industry, as House of Arti became the first luxury petite brand to debut their designs during NYFW. I graced the pages of esteemed publications including Harper’s Bazaar España, Elle Italia, Marie Claire Italia, Madame Figaro FR., and The Impression for my NYFW debut. It is no small feat for a petite model to be featured in these esteemed publications, but I broke through the barriers, setting a new standard.
My abilities aren’t confined to just the catwalk; I’ve also accomplished stuff as an actress and fashion stylist. My on-screen presence in shows such as The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel, Godfather of Harlem, and Medium Rare has wowed audiences, while my fashion styling expertise has brought out the soul expression of individuals through their clothing. As a Fashion stylist I’ve been published in publications such as L’officiel India, Glamour Bulgaria, and Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam. My clients for styling include Adorama, Canon, The Moxy Times Square, V- flat world, Jeep, and Eddie Bauer.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Of course I can share my story on how I built my audience on social media. It definitely took awhile. I initially began actively working on my social media presence back in 2019 when my agent at the time told me I needed to focus on building my presence on social media for my modeling career. The agency I was with at the time had a partnership with a company that helped develop individuals’ social media presence through understanding their niche and what their target audience would be based on those niches. That definitely made it a lot smoother for me to build my presence online and I did see a significant increase in followers and engagement after that. Although I had the help of my Agency and that company at the time I felt like I was constantly going through rebranding and trying to figure out how to express myself on social media. One thing that helped was understanding Who I am and that in itself was a journey; even till this day I would say I know 80% of who I truly am. Being authentic on social media definitely helped with my presence and is something I always tell people who are trying to start to build their social media presence. People really love authenticity and I do believe that’s a response to the large amount of artificial imagery that people have painted about themselves since the start of social media. It’s really important for an individual within the Fashion and Entertainment Industry to show aspects of themselves that’s more authentic to who they are because the masses will have this perspective naturally that we live a glamorous life and are “perfect” (which we can be if we are in alignment with our true soul selves) but giving the masses a glimpse into other parts of ourselves outside of our work will help to broaden their perspective and realize there’s a connection.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think they struggle to understand that as a true creative we constantly have to be creating. It’s so intertwined within our DNA it’s almost like we’re missing a part of ourselves when we aren’t being creative. Personally, I get depressed and feel so off emotionally when I’m not being creative. My Saturn being in Aries in the 5th house might have a slight influence on that but I always find other things to do creatively when I’m not modeling or Acting. For instance, when I’m home I’ll either be on my acoustic guitar, draping a new pattern on my dress form, drawing designs, dancing, or editing photographs. Honestly that’s what keeps me sane when I’m in between jobs. That’s the main reason why I have such a creative career.
