We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful TIAN GAN. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with TIAN below.
TIAN, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Before 2016, I was a product manager in an IT company, but I am always passionate in art and love video games. I believe that I should pursue the career where my passion lands. So I saved money, quit my job, and studied in Entertainment Design Department in Art Center College of Design from 2017 to 2021. In School, my major is Concept Design, which would train my how to design characters, environments, props, and vehicles for video games, films, theme parks, and animations. After graduation, I am working in video game industry as a concept artist.
I believe the motivation that driven me to change my career and start a new career is that I love what I am doing, and I try my best to improve, to grow, and to be better. I also enjoy the process of thinking, imagining, and researcing a concept visual idea, and then bring it to live by using no matter painting, drawing, or 3D modeling. I also beleive that the arts I created are communicating with my audiences, they might love it, enjoy it, hate it, or feel sad about it. It is a way for me to communicate with the world. With all these, I enjoy my journey as an concept artists.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a concept artist, I design character, environment, props, and vehicle for video games, films, theme parks and animation. I can do tranditional drawing, and most of the time I use digital ways suck as digital painting, 3D modeling and VR modeling. From 2020, I started to using my ideas and skills to help game studios visualize their games. I created visual concept designs and arts for “Pac Man” in Heavy Iron Studio. I also created key art for important pitch deck for VitalXP. I I also worked as freelancer and made theme park concept designs for Saudi Arabis Vision 2030 projects. I used my arts to make this project visually appealing and fit what the marketing needs. In Bad Robot Games. I designed all the creatures and part of the environments for two of the game projects. I love my journey as a concept artist, I can bring the game to life with my artistic taste, choices, visions and skills, which can create visual impact on the projects and the players.
I am also thrilled to see that my art works got recognition by other professionals and other artists. I was the winner of Applied Art Photography & Illustration Awards, also the winner of Creative Quarterly 72. Three of my works were shortlisted in ADC(Art Director Club) 102st Annual Awards. All of these encourage me to trust my imagination and keep making batter arts. I also learn so much for other artists.
In addition to being a concept artist. I also like photography which is an important way for me to build my visual library and gather inspirations. Some of my photos were shown in Camelback Gallery, Grey Cube Gallery, Praxis Gallery, The Chateau Gallery, and also “DER GREIF” magazine 15th anniversary display in Palillon333 gallery. It is encouraging that I got chances to share my visions with other audiences.
No matter concept art or photography, I am trying to push my limit to find the most appealing way to communicate my visions.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that, I can visualize my idea for my own projects or my clients. So that I can share my vision with audiences, or my clients can have their vision being visulized in real life. This is a creative journey to bring more visual beauty, excitements, and inspirations to the world. As I continue my journey as an concept artist, I will also find my own voice as an artist so that I can create unique visual languages.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I always have ideas about creating a unique imaginary world. So I would like to create some unique personal projects, so that I can share with more people. The ultimate goal is to create something that could be defined as my own IP.
