We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiaira Ball a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiaira, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The inspiration behind the Down with Being Extra Foundation comes from one of the most beautiful women I know—my sister, Lavonna Ball. She is truly one of God’s greatest creations. Lavonna was born with a special needs disorder known as Down Syndrome. For those unfamiliar, Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, leading to various physical and developmental characteristics, including intellectual disabilities, distinctive facial features, and a heightened risk of certain health issues. Hence, the name: “Down” (for Down Syndrome) and “Extra” (for the extra chromosome). Oh, and I embrace being extra in everything I do, which inspired the name of the foundation.
Lavonna not only lives with Down Syndrome but also faced a heart condition that doctors predicted would limit her lifespan. Yet, she has defied every odd and exceeded all expectations. God has truly blessed us.
Lavonna’s radiant spirit caught the attention of someone who referred her to Make-A-Wish. They flew our family to Disney World, creating an unforgettable experience. As an adult, I have never forgotten that moment, and a deep sense within my heart urged me to help other children and their families feel the same joy we experienced. I woke up one day and asked God for guidance. Although I had no prior knowledge about starting a non-profit, understanding my purpose fueled my desire to learn.
I began researching, connecting with people, asking questions, and becoming an ambassador for various organizations like the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). I participated in walks supporting children with diverse needs and forged relationships with businesses that provide resources for those facing special needs or chronic illnesses.
The mission of Down with Being Extra is to empower children by nurturing lasting feelings of hope and happiness. We strive to equip them with the resources, strength, and motivation to navigate their medical journeys with resilience. My commitment is to turn children dreams into reality, offering children the chance to fulfill their most cherished aspirations. Whether it’s traveling to their dream destination, meeting their favorite celebrity, or anything else they desire, we aim to make it happen.
For instance, I envision flying a special child and their entire immediate family to a theme park, with all expenses covered. Upon arrival, they would be greeted with a large, personalized sign, ensuring a warm welcome. A team would assist with their luggage as we escort them through the airport, and a vehicle would be ready to transport them to a luxurious hotel, Airbnb, or resort. Throughout their stay, all expenses would be taken care of by the Down with Being Extra Foundation. While visiting the theme parks, they would bypass all lines and enjoy unlimited rides, creating an unforgettable experience.
Our overarching goal is to bring comfort and joy to the families of these children and provide essential resources for their guardians and loved ones, helping them navigate daily life. Lastly, I encourage everyone to discover the rewards that come from giving back.

Tiaira, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, Ga. I grew up with 5 brothers and 1 sister on the southside of Atlanta. Later I found out I had an older sister who stays in NY but I grew up knowing only 1. Growing up, my parents raised me to be what I would call “Extra” but to them it was discipline, creativity, responsible, and alert. It taut me how to prioritize what’s important starting at a very young age. Taking care of my sister was one of my biggest task. I learned, I had a deep-seated Dream for others to appreciate the uniqueness and value of my baby sister’s special needs condition and individuals similar to her. Despite medical expectations that Lavonna would not live past a certain age, she surpassed them. My passion is fueled by the unwavering prayers and support of our family and friends. I strongly believes that Lavonna’s continued thriving is due to the strong foundation of faith, love, equity, and inclusion.” Realizing my purpose was a journey in itself. It became evident to me that my mission extended beyond caring for my sister. I was driven by the desire to make those around me feel special, valued, and understood. This realization sparked within me a deeper commitment to creating an inclusive environment where the uniqueness of individuals like Lavonna is celebrated and cherished.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What significantly contributed to my reputation was primarily word of mouth. I made it a point to discuss my foundation whenever possible and networked with individuals I believed could enhance my exposure. Attending various events allowed me to gather ideas and connect with knowledgeable people. As I progressed, I became a recognizable figure in the community. Eventually, I began exploring opportunities for collaboration or partnership investments. I would devise plans that were mutually beneficial for all parties involved. This approach is how I continue to strengthen my reputation.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I felt incredibly nervous about hosting my first fundraising event, but I refused to let that deter me. I reached out to various schools and recreation centers to organize an event, only to be met with rejection or silence. It seemed they weren’t interested in collaborating. That’s when I decided to immerse myself in their world. I began attending different events they hosted, particularly the wheelchair basketball games. I went to every match leading up to the championship game, and I was captivated by the young athletes competing in such a challenging sport despite their medical conditions. Witnessing their determination inspired me to approach the Athletics Director of Clayton County Public Schools. They graciously agreed to let me use their facility and wheelchair equipment, and the AD even volunteered to assist with the event. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: when you believe in something, never give up, because your purpose is greater than your plan!
