We were lucky to catch up with Tia Banks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tia , thanks for joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
OMG, yes I try to take as many vacations as I can. Your business is your baby but as an entrepreneur of a small business, you feel obligated to work work work with no play because you want to see your business flourish but what about your happiness, right. As a business owner, I take up to six trips a year with two trips that I do every year which is my family vacation and baecation, Being the business person I am, I always plan ahead for vacations so I make sure that my businesses will be okay while I’m gone. I don’t make appointments with clients prior to vacation. I make sure all the emails that need to be sent is sent at least three or more days prior. I make sure that I set the right expectations for myself and the business that is reasonable to ensure that things are still smooth while I’m on vacation and when I make it back home. I run all my businesses myself so I have to be very strategic about things before I leave to have fun. I absolutely don’t do any work on these vacations. I had to learn how to have fun without thinking or doing business. Now of course if an idea come across my mind then I will take my phone out and put it in my notes so I can act on it later. When you just continuously working with no breathing room to relax, that is when you get stressed out and overwhelmed. You may can only take one trip a year and that’s fine but when you do, make sure the focus is fun not work unless it’s extremely important.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have a few businesses and still building. I guess I’m what some would call ‘a serial entrepreneur. Hi, my name is Tia Queen Banks and I’m a native of Detroit, Michigan. Every since I was in like second grade where you have to trace your alphabets and numbers, I loved to write. In middle school I wrote a poem for a nationwide child poem collection. In high school I was an editor on our school newspaper and I had around five articles published with the Detroit News paper. I also grow up loving to help and take care of people. These two things combined is what fueled my businesses.
Want to hear a secret? Queen Butterflies LLC originally was supposed to be an Adult Foster Home. Oh yes but now it is ‘The Paperwork Central’ created by the paperwork pusher. Queen Butterflies LLC assist people with almost anything dealing with paperwork: NSA (Notary), budgeting, form LLCs and corporations, trademark/ service mark, taxes, resumes, business planning, business consultant among other paperwork and services are offered after normal business hours. Queen Butterflies LLC was the start of an enterprise being built.
Voicing with Queen started off being a blog established in 2020 during the pandemic because I want to write about different things and advertise businesses nationwide. Now with this business I have a co-writer that will write a piece occasionally. We have a section where we display different events around the world. We give homage to people that paved a way by telling a little of their history. I have always wanted to start a podcast and now Voicing with Queen is also a podcast now. I have co-host and we talk about anything. This to is not limited on topics however we interview people around the world about their brand and businesses.
Luxury on Demand was not an intended business for me. My boyfriend at the time got tired of me complaining about the ladies who suppose to sell hair not coming thru in enough time to get my hair done. Like I’ll order from them two weeks ahead of time and still had to go to the beauty supply store to buy more before the ones I already purchase got here because I have an event or just want my hair done. I had an investor that went half on the product with me to launch. The bundles was entered into the hair versus in Detroit, Michigan 2021 and won the best bundles. I sell my hair to personal clients but about to expand soon.
I published my first novel, “The Ultimate Betrayal: A Strangely Unfamiliar novel” in December of 2021 which has always been a dream of mines. It took me four years to actually write the story and then I found pieces of other stories that I had written and took pieces and paste them together to form a great book. I am currently working on part two, it was set to come out on the second year of the first book but scheduling had to be pushed back so it my be the beginning of 2024. I have this expression inside the book that says, ‘Live Life Don’t Let Life Live You”. I took that expression and is now the name of a 2024 Planner that put together for all people to help them focus on you. Inside the planner is not only a calendar but a contact list, weight tracker, goals section, start a business section, password section, among so many sections; condensed version of all the services I do in a DIY sort of. The focus is you taking in every part of life instead of you missing moments because life running you ragged. You can purchase a copy of my book on Amazon.and you can purchase your 2024 planner on Barnes and Noble and Amazon.
Queen Butterflies LLC also had came with some programs that gives back to the community. Feed the Homeless, Adopt a Family and Adopt a Senior, and Senior Grocery giveaway. I decided to finish up my non-profit and to move all these programs over to the non-profit. Cene It Thrive was created in 2023 to continue with these programs. Every Christmas we do the Adopt a Family/Adopt a Senior program and I’m so proud of the increase we have had over the years which brings us to our 4th annual Adopt a Family/ Adopt a Senior. We have things in place if anyone would like to donate and/or sponsor any of our programs.
I said I was a serial entrepreneur of many things but everything I do is focused around things that i love to do. I love to help people, give back to the community and make people happy. That warms my heart totally. I’m sort of a social butterfly at times due to having to network and promote. My hobbies is acting, modeling and hosting. I have been in numerous movies on TUBI such as Predators, On the Run, 3rd Degree, The Wrong One, Cut Throat and Street Legal to name a few. I have modeled for different small owned black businesses such as: City Style 313, 1st Lady Essentials, Black Foxx Clothing, Out of Pocket, Jewels by Lina and a few more. I was a video vixen in Chalmaine Tha God video ‘Steppas’. Yes I stay busy that is why vacations are very much needed and important.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I know you wondering why I don’t have any workers, well it’s because I’m a broke entrepreneur. Just Kidding. Yes all my businesses was and is funded by credit and me. Queen Butterflies LLC and Voicing with Queen only need an office and office supplies. I use a room in my house and does all my paperwork from there. I pay a percentage to the main house for the usage of the internet and electricity. I have net 30 accounts for the business in which I uses for the supplies that I need such as printing paper, pens, paper clips, ink, etc., it’s charged to the company and they give you 30 days to pay it back. Now as any business owner, I pay out my personal cash if need be to ensure that the bill is paid preferably before the due date. Net 30 also help with building business credit. So these companies don’t take much money to operate. Marketing and advertising is where the cost is but I do them things myself as well. Now the as far as all the programs goes, they are 100% funded by myself. For the Adopt a Family/Senior program, we have had a few black own companies such as CityStyle 313 and The D Spot step in and adopt families and seniors that applied to the program. Anyone that want to be apart of any of these programs can easily submit an application for donation/sponsorship through our website.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When it comes to social media, I tell everyone with a business to separate your private (personal) pages from your business. page. Make a business social media account that showcase nothing but your business. You never know who is watching your pages so if you posting negative things on your social media pages and you can potentially lose a new client/customer or a deal with a major brand so be very mindful as to what you post. You build your business following by posting constantly of what your business offer. Yes, I understand that you may not have the time to post all the time so here are somethings that I uses. Schedule your post ahead of time. Link your business instagram and your business facebook pages together so when you post on one it will automatically cross-post to the other social media page. Also join groups that are relevant to your line of business for more exposure and networking. If you are having an event, create the event on your business page with the information that people need to know.
