We were lucky to catch up with Thurmina Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Thurmina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned the craft of Music, over the 41 years of living in many ways. It started as a little girl, my mom would sit my siblings and I in a circle on the floor and sing to us. As time passed on, I begin to sing in the choir at church with my grandmother. When I was in elementary school I was in the school choir and I was taught to sing out. When I reached the 6th grade I was in my middle school choir under the leadership of Mrs. Linda Knight Burkley and she gave us precise instructions in and on the art of music. As time went on she taught us how to sing properly with correct technique and how to be sure you’re mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually healthy. I gained the confidence and courage to sing more and more throughout middle school under her leadership. When I reached 9th grade I was graced and blessed to have the same teacher move to my high school as the choir director and teacher. She was stern, loving, caring, supportive, informative, knowledgeable, precise, strict, intelligent and more. I, to this day carry with me everything she taught me. As years went on I began to study music outside of school through others such as church choir directors, family members and friends. I have been able to learn under many great leaders and profound directors, such as Micah Stampley, Greta Jordan, Earl Duncan and THE Kurt Carr (all during my years at The Fountain of Praise Church). I have been able to gain great knowledge from so many all over the world it has truly been a blessing. I have learned the art of music in the studio with my God Brother Tantrum and BlackALack (Damien and Darren Crumity), my friend Cl’Cle’ or Ms. Houston from SPC (LaShavia West), my cousins, Tami Latrell, Cash McAlista and Sam Thousand, my play brothers Baron Nelms, Brandon Johnson, and so many others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I would have to say the basics like this, I am Thurmina Adams, a mother of 2 daughters biologically, mother of 4 by love, and a grandmother of 2 by love. Each of her children are loved equally and each child has a place in her heart that NO ONE can replace. Yet, each child is reminded of what the Bible says and how they can find it to get an understanding for themselves. I am somewhat of a music head and have been listening to most genres my whole life. I equate music to almost everything. I have loved music, singing, and the art or sport since I can remember. I am a minister in the Lords Church, and a Prophet by the birthrights of God. I love the craft and the artistry in the music that can be so beautiful and powerful. Music is me and I am Music!
Do you manufacture your product(s)? Tell us the story of how you got started – did you already know how to manufacture the product? Did you have to find a vendor who could manufacture for you and if so, how did you find the right one? What lessons have your learned along the way about manufacturing a product?
I honestly do not know how or exactly what got me started in the music the way I am. Meaning why my PASSION for music is so profound, emotional, exquisite, productive, precise and well established within the way it is. I can honestly say there isn’t anything in particular that gave me this drive or push or go get it for me to study the music. I have always had it in me! I have always been knowledgeable or experienced. It’s in my bloodstream! It comes naturally, the singing and the ear that I have when it comes to the music, when it comes to the art of the music, it comes directly from God. I was literally born with it. With that being said, I guess because I already had it, even being in the learning stages of it everyone around me saw it so they pushed me, but I chose to enhance it with the study of the craft along the way. I chose to gain more wisdom, understanding, insight, and intelligence on the music! It was to remind myself that I must continue to use what I have to keep it moving inside and growing it. While I grow it, along side of keeping it, I must remember to trust that the world needs me more than I understood and my knowledge of music or my ability to do music the way I do.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To support a true artist that is thriving, the best thing to do is to always remind them that their voice or craft is needed. To be unique and stand out amongst a crowd. I love being different and standing out because I’m not the typical psalmist or artist or poet or writer. I am one that it can come to me today and I’ll complete it in a day or weeks or months if I am focused. Once focused I am drawn to the inner workings of my craft and all my wisdom and knowledge of my craft comes to the forefront so I complete the task forcefully expeditiously. Not many can do that, I am gifted and talented to do such because I am always focusing on being sure I do it exactly as God would want me to do it no matter what it is for. So to support anyone always remember everyone is uniquely them and no two people are the same. So to be supportive to an artist or any individual you MUST and I mean ANYOne please allow them to work their craft in the way GOD gives it to them. If they aren’t sure about it or what or how, remind them to Find the INNER passion and focus on that more than the gift than the want of the money.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I can recall sitting down with my business partner/security guard conversing about the art of music. I begin to give him my knowledge and wisdom on what I knew and how I can hear the difference in talent and experience or trained and taught. He said to me, when will you write a book about it? I said hummm good question. That next night I got up, as we communicated the same conversation again and began to type. Completed my study guide in two days. It is now published on Amazon and ready to purchase. It’s symbolic and effectively designed to help artist in the music world engage with their audiences enough to make themselves successful, but also helps them become able to communicate their talent or gift effectively in every way through their art. Although the title is about praise and worship leaders anyone in the industry can use it and it can be a great help for ANY singer! It’s called, “ The Study Guide to Becoming an Effective Praise & Worship Leader”
