Hi Thomas, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
At Vanguard, our mission is to build a community of resilient individuals who embody strength, leadership, and growth. This mission is deeply personal to me and stems from my experiences navigating the challenges of team sports, professional careers, and the everyday adversities that shape character. Through these experiences, I developed a profound appreciation for the value of hard work, perseverance, and the transformative power of a supportive community.
The mission also reflects my passion for helping others achieve more for themselves. Whether on the field, in the workplace, or in personal growth, I’ve found immense fulfillment in empowering others to realize their potential. At Vanguard, we aim to do just that by offering not only high-quality apparel and nutrition but also a network of tools and support to inspire leadership and excellence.

Vanguard is built on a mission to empower individuals through strength, leadership, and resilience. We offer a range of premium products designed to support both physical and mental growth, including high-quality apparel and performance-focused nutrition. Our apparel combines style with functionality, ensuring comfort and durability for both active and everyday wear. Our nutrition products are crafted to enhance muscle growth, endurance, cognitive health, and overall wellness, helping individuals reach their fitness goals and improve their daily lives.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Vanguard is 100% self-funded, and the initial capital came from my professional career. When I started, I didn’t have much money set aside for the business, so I used personal savings to fund the early stages. Over time, I developed a small, systematic budget to manage ongoing projects and cover the business’s costs.
The budget is still relatively modest, but it’s been enough to keep things moving forward. I’ve focused on reinvesting earnings carefully to ensure steady growth and building the brand in a sustainable way, all while staying committed to long-term success without relying on outside funding.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We’ve actually gone through a pivot recently due to our previous designs not resonating as strongly with consumers as we hoped. We used to offer artistic-style shirts that reflected ideas and concepts we believed in, but artistically, they didn’t seem to catch the eye of our audience. This was the primary reason we decided to shift our direction.
Now, we’re moving towards a more creative approach with one-off, high-quality street style shirts that feature unique prints aligned with our brand’s motif. We believe this change allows us to express our artistic vision in a way that resonates more with our customers. In addition, we’re increasing the quality of our textiles by using higher-grade fabrics and experimenting with different types of washes to create more unique looks and feels.
We’re also updating our more basic designs to embrace minimalist styles and looking to expand into women’s apparel. Overall, this pivot is an exciting evolution for Vanguard, and we’re focused on creating a brand that blends creativity with quality while staying true to our core values.
