We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Thomas Pallier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Thomas, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
It is never too early. Preparation and timing is everything in this industry. My journey from Germany to Hollywood has been a winding road of discovery and growth, deeply rooted in a childhood passion sparked by my father’s weekend trips to the movies. I vividly remember my first visit to a movie theater at the age of 6, where my fascination with storytelling began. After that experience back then, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d awkwardly pronounce “director.” However, it was a pivotal moment when I first watched Pulp Fiction many years later. The sharp dialogue and narrative flair astounded me, igniting a realization: “You can write movies like this?” From that moment on, I immersed myself in screenplays, devouring them with a hunger to understand the craft. Despite this early clarity, the path to Hollywood was far from straightforward. After making a cheeky Horror-Comedy short film with friends at 17, I took a detour into journalism and later produced branded and industrial films. While these experiences were valuable, they felt like a creative wasteland compared to my true calling. Rediscovering my passion for writing and directing, then for television reignited my ambitions. It wasn’t until much later that I made the daring move to Hollywood, driven by an unwavering belief in my destiny to make movies. The journey has tested my resolve and taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and the art of filmmaking. Today, as I reflect on the twists and turns that led me here, I am grateful for every step—it was the journey that shaped the artist I am today.

Thomas, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Falling in love with movies from a young age, my passion for storytelling was sparked during childhood movie outings with my dad. However, life’s path took unexpected turns—I faced personal tragedies that temporarily sidetracked my ambitions. Despite these challenges, I found my footing again in Berlin and achieved success in television. Yet, I soon realized that true fulfillment lay beyond these achievements; I yearned to pursue my dreams in Hollywood, the ultimate arena for cinematic expression. So, I packed my bags, flew to LA, and enrolled in film school to pursue an MFA in directing. During this transformative journey, I had the privilege of receiving invaluable guidance and mentorship from absolute masters of their craft. Including from the esteemed two-time Academy Award-winning director, Asghar Farhadi.”
Directing, for me, is a blend of artistic vision and problem-solving—a constant quest to bring compelling stories to life. What distinguishes my work is a deep-seated commitment to both entertain and provoke thought. Whether crafting gripping narratives, poignant dramas, or visually striking commercials, I strive to create experiences that resonate with audiences on a profound level.
I take great pride in translating ideas into impactful visual stories that leave a lasting impression. What I’m most proud of is the opportunity to contribute to the cinematic landscape, pushing creative boundaries while staying true to the essence of storytelling. I hope my work stands as a testament to dedication, creativity, and a genuine love for the art of filmmaking.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was editing late at night for a documentary, while the hum of the fluorescent lights and the subtle roar of the computer fans seemingly got louder and louder until it all faded into nothing. A sudden restlessness arose and started to stir things up. Soon after this all nighter, it hit me hard—I don’t belong here. I need to be where dreams were born and legends made. What a cliché but still the truth.
Leaving a cushy job was very easy. You just quit. But it is scary. Because it meant ditching security for uncertainty at best. But the pull to chase my dream grew too strong to ignore. So, I made the call and left it all behind. I was done with the safe bet, ready to dive headfirst into the wild unknown.
With every step away from stability, the thrill of possibility surged. Sure, it was risky as hell to walk away from that paycheck. But deep down, I knew staying put would suffocate my soul. Hollywood was calling, and I had to make sure that it has my number. It was time to swap comfort for chaos, to stake my claim among the dreamers and machers of this lovely city of ours.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by an unyielding search for truth, a relentless pursuit to build communities through shared experiences, and the sheer joy of entertaining people. In a world often clouded by pretense, I find solace in uncovering raw, authentic stories that resonate universally. Each film is not just a narrative but a bridge connecting hearts and minds. It’s about stripping away the layers to reveal something genuine, something that sparks conversations and forges connections. That, to me, is the essence of filmmaking — a relentless quest to illuminate truths, foster empathy, and ultimately, to entertain with a depth that lingers.
