We were lucky to catch up with Thomas Nelson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Thomas, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I feel like music has been a gateway to alot of things im currently into. I picked up song writing at a early age. I love the way music connects with people. Im actually still learning how to be a better writer everyday. I personally don’t feel like you could speed up the process of song writing. I just think it comes from experience. The skills I think are most essential would be relatability, creativity and authenticity. The biggest obstacle is really time. Making time to learn, making time to write and making time to just be present in the space you feel you belong

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, my name is Thomas. Better known as T Da GMB (Genuine Made Brands). Im a music artist representing Kansas City Mo. Currently living in Las Vegas. I picked up on music before I was in middle school. I recorded my 1st vocals at the age of ten and I been passionate about a music career every since. Im now at the prime age of 33 with tons of experience, songs and creativity to share with like minded individuals. Im also a recording engineer. I took a engineering class about 5 years ago and since then I’ve engineered several projects for myself and other artist included. Im most proud of the growth and my ability to learn things that’s beneficial to the space im in. I’ve wrote video treatments, set up photo shoots, learned how to edit content, picked up audio engineering, I’ve performed on numerous stages, wrote alot of great songs and I’ve met alot of cool people on the journey. My brand is centered around my name which is “Genuine Made.” Its more about what’s in you and not on you. Being “Genuine Made” is about representing who you are in the most authentic way. Its more about your core values and the effect you have on people around you.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Its several things that come to mind when you think of better support for artist. I feel like the main thing is the “quality over quantity” factor. Its so many artist that make music, it’s difficult to find creatives that stand out with genuine energy and authenticity. Trends water down the music scene which make it hard for artist with substance or the artist who don’t follow the trends to get noticed as much. My advice for the listener or the supporter would be to seek out what you like and not whats trendy to like. And my advice to a creative would be to make what you love and not what you think other people love.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’ve had several goals over the course of my journey but right now my goal is to create music or content that I love and share it in the spaces that feel most genuine. I used to chase validation at one point, but now my validation comes from me creating goals and accomplishing what i set out to do. I spent these last 5, maybe 6 months working on this album titled “Genuine Made” which represents my real experiences and who i am as a person. It officially dropped on September 12th. Im proud of myself for following through regardless of the set backs I endured during the process. The journey is where you build character and I feel like you hear it throughout my most recent work. Just getting it out the way I intended was a mission accomplished
