We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Thomas Hinds a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Thomas, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I picked up a pen at an early age. Started with sketching cartoons and writing story lines in second or third grade. Knowing what I know now about the only way that I could have sped up the learning process would have involved more supportive people in my life. I honed on what I could, while I could and have no regrets about the path I’ve been down. One of the most essential skills in my opinion would be to stay observant and to continue to read as much as possible. The only obstacles I’ve had along the way was my own time management and optimizing my schedule to allow me more opportunities to hone things even more.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a singer/songwriter out of northern Georgia who got back into writing and playing music for a second time later in life. I have three full length albums, two EPs and a few single songs available anywhere you listen to your music. After my last child graduated I took the leap into doing this full time out on the road. I average 70k miles a year playing across the country and have grown into my own style and voice over the years. One of my proudest moments was having a stellar string of shows at SXSW this year in Austin,Tx while having my latest album reach #86 on the top 100 Americana Album charts, had three songs in the Georgia top ten charts as well. Staying true to my heart I can only write and sing what touches me deeply. I have never been one to play for the sake of playing, I want the listener to feel it and realize we have more in common than we may realize.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I started playing and writing in my early twenties, life has a way of making you choose tough decisions and with a young family I chose to be in my children’s lives and put away the pen and guitar. When my children went out on their own I felt I was ready to make another run at doing it full time. I set out in 2019, playing across the country a few times before making a new home in Georgia. I haven’t looked back since.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal in this journey is to continue to push myself to continually dig deeper, grow as a writer, musician and artist in general. The fire is deep inside and I am at a point of constant inspiration and ideas that will open up the opportunities down the road for bigger and better shows, albums, and creative arts.
