Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Thomas Green . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Thomas , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
It took some time, a few years from my start to earn a full-time living from what I do for a career. I had a corporate job for years in the resturant industry. I actually was a full-time college student pursuing a hotel and restaurant management degree. I thought this was what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. I enjoy people, catering to the needs of others, to be selfless. My late grandparents and family taught me that. From day one as being a creative it wasn’t easy, but I knew it was a way. God has always been the foundation of my life, my trust lies in him forever until the day I leave this Earth and his plan for me I will follow with no shame at all. I believe that all things fell in line in the timeframe they were supposed to.
Thomas , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Thomas Green for those who don’t know, also known as DJ Square. I began my journey as a DJ in 2016. I have always had a major love for music, how it’s made, beats, production, the true art form of DJ’ing. I feel like it’s like telling your own story through creative expression of musical selections. One of my best friends was getting to graduate college from Sam Houston University, we would always joke about the topic but I had no idea where to start of course. Overtime I was lead in the right direction as to where to go with it. I started off very small, it wasn’t not a overnight process, I practiced alone for months. The feedback I sought out was honest, I wanted to better myself. I am my toughest critic, the only competition I have is within myself. I admire every peer that I have, and love each and every one of them they are amazing at what they do and bring to the table. I kept the faith, and asked for direction and to be led down the right path to be able to lead those, be a mentor at some point and so much more. I had my first major club gig as a opener in September of 2017. Scott Summers is his name who showed me the ropes in the beginning as a DJ. Scott was not only a mentor as a DJ to me, but also a great friend. The sky is the limit, you can do anything that you want to do. Time is a mindset, you have to ask yourself how bad do you really want something. You are your own competition and no one else. I decided to finally pursue the music entertainment industry fully after that. I spent a lot of time praying and for God to lead me in the right direction, I eventually left my job and haven’t looked back ever since. I wish that I could name every single person who played a part of the shaping and growth of my career, there are so many who played such a major role. I want to provide the most memorable experience for everyone I perform for. Just to name a few, DJ McDaniels, DJ J-Stone, Mr. Rogers, Cee Watts, Q-Holic, Flywhite, DJ Ari, Kiotti, Molo, DJ Youngstreetz, Yaya, Brandon Starr, Jay-R Ramos, JR Martins, Jacob Stephens, Ruth Valdez the whole ALIFE Hospitality Group, Alan Hernandez, Casa Blanca, Victor Alas, it’s SOOO many more I could name on this list. Each and everyday I thank God for every single individual who has played a role in the shaping of my career without these people I wouldn’t know where I would be.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Knowing your audience is one of the best things that I can tell someone who is wanting to build their presence there. Set goals for yourself, why are you on social media in the first place? Be very specific with the goals you make, make sure they are obtainable and measurable. Keep the goals relevant to what your overall goal is that you are looking to achieve. Have a personality, basically be a human being. Get to know your audience on a personal level. Build the relationships, seek those, and not just followers. Be visual, market yourself because if you don’t then who will. Make your presence know for sure is a key component. Stay active, provide the content that the audience wants to see, think outside the box. You are a visionary, so use that to your advantage.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It never gets old to me to hear the ooooh’s and ahhhh’s of my audience. That is one of the most satisfying things about being in the industry. I get to tell you a different story night in and night out through musical selections. One of the best feelings in the world. I want to give you the most memorable experience that I can provide for you in a positive way. I want to always lead by example and mentor those who are seeking the advice and guidance that I once asked for myself. To me that is one of the most rewarding and satisfying things about being a creative, we can all learn something from each other. Something one might not know, someone else does and that is how we grow as a collective.
