We were lucky to catch up with Thomas Brewer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Thomas, thanks for joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I was working as a senior research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory when I noticed my boss’s desk. It was a mass of papers and research articles. It was then that I decided to start my own business utilizing my science based skills. I did not want my future to include continuous grant writing to fund my research. I figured that I wanted to control the narrative regarding my success. There was too much uncertainty working for someone else.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a PhD chemist who specializes in blood microscopy, health, nutrition, and longevity. Even as a child, I was always interested in science and decided to become a scientist at an early age. When I graduated with a B.S. in chemistry, my advisors told me that I should continue my education and obtain a PhD. Since there was a recession at the time, I took their advice. Good thing, since B.S. chemists always work for PhD chemists. I started working in research at a large chemical company, then pivoted to the national laboratory system, then went back to the chemical industry, and finally started my own business.
I immediately went bankrupt, which was my biggest fear. I did not want to be the typical first time entrepreneur who fails. Yet that failure allowed me to focus on a solution and eliminated the fear of it happening again. In essence, I knew what to do if I failed again. But I didn’t fail again.
My business strategy was to analyze client’s blood utilizing a fairly rare microscope, then offer them the highest quality supplements to support my claims for improvement. Most of my clients were complaining about poor digestion, fatigue, or skin rashes. Some already had a diagnosis from a medical doctor for heart disease, arthritis, or even cancer. I chose to provide free follow up appointments to my clients, since I knew my supplements and recommendations actually work. All they had to do was follow my advice. Each client ended up referring their family and friends to me. It was better than me explaining what I do, which is different, yet supplemental, to a standard blood analysis.
Some of the parameters I look at during a blood microscopy include plaque crystals, uric acid crystals, parasitic bacteria, yeast, fungus, various types of stress strands, immune system strength and activity as evidenced by the white blood cell size and movement, protein digestion, fat digestion, carbohydrate digestion, overall nutrition, smoke or fume damage to the red blood cells, dehydration, and liver stress.
I provide my clients solutions to health problems that western medicine can’t solve. The bigger the challenge, the better. My integrative approach includes dietary changes, supplements, exercise, breathing techniques, and energy work. When clients look at me, they realize that I actually live what I teach.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My reputation was built from being the most educated in my field. Not just having a PhD, but from constant learning and continuous education. My clients ask health questions and obtain answers from me in areas that expand from blood microscopy. The other blood microscopists, and there are very few, only focus on selling products and do not provide free follow ups.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Since I did not desire to look or sound like a typical salesman, I decided to build my business from referrals only. I never advertised.
