Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Thomas Angeletti. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Thomas, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The most frustrating yet rewarding part of creating is learning how to create. Not only with tools like lights, cameras, etc, but learning how to create from within. Searching for the right story or the perfect shot takes time, and you must learn to be paitent and stay the course. I think what separates a pro from a weekend warrior is the ability to understand that you are the creation, the tool, the vessel, and that the camera that you’re holding is merely a tool, and that you are the conduit to whats around and inside you ready to come out.

Thomas, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Thomas Angeletti. I am a filmmaker and founder of Alysm Films. I was born to be a storyteller, and ive done this through many different types of Art over the years. Filmmaking seemed to be what reasonated in my soul and felt right, I love taking people through the journey of a story. One that was told through a lens and done by talented actors.
As far as what I do, I direct, DP, and edit short films, commercials, weddings, and other events. Lately, I’ve been focusing on moving from short films to concentrate on feature films next year. The biggest problem I solve for people I work with is “I know what I want to say, but I dont know how to say it”, or “I have this idea/script/etc, and I have no idea what to do next.”
What I’m most proud of is the project that our team creates. I’m most proud of making everyone better around me, as they inspire me to be better and grow as not only a person, but as a creative. What sets me apart from others is that I will out work them. I know that my drive and passion are unmatched, and I’ll stop at nothing to make an idea come to fruition.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
As far as creative books go, the most inspirational book ive read this year is The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. He really makes you think and tap into the creative inside you in a way that’s not of this world, but of a spiritual realm. Videos that local creatives make constantly inspire me and drive me to keep going, If we are talking about management, the only management I really struggle with is that of time management, so getting things done has helped me out a lot.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The hardest lesson to learn as a filmmaker is that you can’t do it all. Nothing really matters if you don’t have the right people around you on and off set. You start out in filmmaking and try to hit the set 1000 miles per hour only to drive yourself down into the ground and probably make a piece of art that could have been better had you taken the time to slow down and surround yourself with a great team
