Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Thom Allen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Thom thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
As a psychotherapist, one of the most profound risks I have taken was when I made the difficult decision to close my company’s physical location after more than 30 years and pivot to offering counseling virtually. Taking the leap from seeing my clients in person at my cozy office to embracing the world of remote online therapy was a risk that changed my life and my practice. Doubts and uncertainties weighed on my mind as I pondered the shift, concerned that the intimacy of face-to-face interactions might be lost in the digital realm. However, the yearning to extend my reach with the deeply meaningful work that I provide pushed me forward. Stepping into the unknown, I invested in technology, adapted my approach, and embraced the challenges. Little did I know that this decision would lead to an inspiring journey of growth and connection. Embracing the virtual platform not only allowed me to bridge distances, reaching individuals from diverse backgrounds, but it also empowered my clients to feel more comfortable and open in their own environments. Witnessing their resilience and progress despite the hurdles affirmed that I had made the right choice. Today, as I look back on this transformative experience, I am grateful for the risk I took, as it not only expanded my horizons but also enriched the lives of those I have the privilege to serve. The lesson learned is clear: sometimes, the most significant achievements are born from stepping out of our comfort zones and daring to embrace change.
Thom, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
While the issues I help with may be diverse, a common theme I see among clients is ultimately the desire for sustainable wellness. We all crave less stress and more happiness, but often don’t fully understand how to get there. I understand the profound role that stress plays in our physical and mental health. I meet clients exactly where they are to help guide them on their journey. Together we explore their unique challenges, discover what needs to change and then create a plan of action. This healing work requires vulnerability, and I am there every step of the way. Clients love the convenience and flexibility that my teletherapy provides, from the comfort of their home or office at a time that works with their busy schedule. I believe everyone deserves a life of emotional health and happiness. My job is to help you get there.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Early in my career as a psychotherapist, I faced the profound challenge of working in a hospice with terminally ill clients and their grieving survivors. The emotional toll of witnessing their struggles and grappling with the inevitable was overwhelming. But it was in those moments of vulnerability and pain that I discovered the true strength of resilience within myself. As I journeyed alongside my clients, I learned to embrace the impermanence of life and the power of finding meaning amidst suffering. These experiences shaped my approach and deepened my empathy, propelling me to specialize in helping clients not only cope with their mental health challenges but also to savor life to the fullest. Today, my greatest joy comes from guiding individuals in their pursuit of happiness and mental well-being. Witnessing their transformation, from navigating despair to embracing life’s joys, fills my heart with a sense of fulfillment and reinforces my belief in the limitless capacity of the human spirit to heal and grow. The resilience of my clients continues to inspire my own resilience, reminding me daily of the profound impact it makes on our life journey.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Without a doubt, if given the chance to rewind time and make the same decision, I would choose my profession as a psychotherapist again in a heartbeat. The journey has been both challenging and immensely rewarding. The opportunity to connect deeply with individuals, witness their growth, and be a guiding light in their darkest moments fills my heart with purpose and fulfillment. Despite the emotional weight that comes with the role, the impact I’ve been able to make in people’s lives makes it all worthwhile. Each day brings unique stories and experiences that continuously teach me about the resilience of the human spirit. Being a counselor allows me to make a real difference in the world and be part of so many transformative journeys. It’s a privilege to walk alongside my clients as they navigate life’s complexities, fostering hope, healing, and personal growth. My passion for this profession grows stronger every day, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the health and wellness of others.
