We were lucky to catch up with Thien Huong Vuong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Thien Huong, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Taking a risk with my business was one of those make-or-break moments that so many of us face. For me, it wasn’t just about trusting the process—it was about staying true to myself, even when everything felt uncertain. In 2021, I made the decision to start Lotus Artistry. Leaving the job I began at the start of my career in 2017 left a hole in my heart; it felt like I was saying goodbye to what had been home to me for nearly five years.
I found myself at a crossroads: I could either start fresh somewhere new or create my own space—a place where both my current and future clients could feel safe and free to be themselves. The name “Lotus” came to me instantly because the flower’s symbolism spoke to me deeply. Coming from a background where taking risks is second nature, I’d always lived with a lingering question of “What if?”; However, the overwhelming feelings of love and support from friends, family, and clients had made it even easier for me to say, “But what if it works out?” because whatever the outcome, I knew I’d pour everything I had into it.
Now, looking back, I could never have imagined the way my business would grow. Staying true to my authenticity has paid off in ways I hadn’t expected, as I now attract clients who are truly meant to walk through my door. In February of this year, I signed my ” big girl” contract lease and celebrated Lotus Artistry’s third-year anniversary in a bigger space. This journey has shaped both my business and my personal growth in ways I couldn’t have foreseen, reaffirming my belief in the importance of trusting myself. While being able to give myself a good pad on the back, I forever will be grateful for those who believed in me and my vision for Lotus Artistry since day one.
Thien Huong, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam, at the beginning of my youth, where the vibrant culture and bustling streets instilled in me a profound appreciation for beauty in everyday life. Growing up, I was surrounded by rich traditions and colorful celebrations, where the art of makeup and fashion played an essential role. Therefore, for as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a little spark for beauty.
After my first year at a local community college, I quickly realized that the 4 years route was not for me. I took a leap of faith and enrolled in the cosmetology program at Paul Mitchel The School Madison in 2016. I found a career opportunity at the career fair that was hosted at the school just a few months before my graduation. In the summer of 2017, I embarked on my professional journey at a prestigious salon just steps away from the heart of Wisconsin’s capital. This experience was instrumental in honing my skills and preparing me for independence in the industry. Nearly five years later, I proudly launched Lotus Artistry.
The name “Lotus Artistry” was inspired by the profound symbolism of the Lotus flower, which represents beauty, resilience, and transformation. Just as the Lotus rises from murky waters to bloom into a stunning flower, I aim to help clients reveal their inner beauty and confidence, no matter their starting point. The artistry aspect reflects the creativity and personal touch involved in each service, emphasizing that every individual is unique and deserves a tailored experience that enhances their natural beauty. Together, the name embodies the journey of self-discovery and empowerment through artful beauty practices. I focus on enhancing the clients’ raw beauty through a combination of expertise, attention to detail, and a personalized approach.
I offer a wide range of in-studio services, including expert haircutting, vibrant coloring, hand-tied extensions, elegant updos, and precise brow waxing and tinting. Along with makeup artistry and lash extensions, among many other services. Each treatment is thoughtfully designed and caters specifically to every client.
For anyone considering visiting Lotus Artistry, I want you to know that our studio is more than just a place for beauty services; it’s a space dedicated to embracing and enhancing who you are. My goal is to make sure that when you leave, you feel confident, empowered, and, most importantly, like the best version of yourself.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Networking within the industry plays a significant role in building your clientele. Establishing meaningful connections with other professionals can open up numerous opportunities that might not be available through traditional marketing methods. By attending industry conferences, workshops, and social events, you can meet potential clients, collaborators, and mentors who can provide valuable insights and referrals.
In addition, I’m not sure if I would call it a strategy, but it is more like sticking to my code of life. I focus on building authentic connections and providing exceptional customer service. When clients feel valued and understood, they not only become loyal supporters but also actively help guide future clients through their positive experiences.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that I could work with every type of client and make every project a success. Early in my career, I approached every opportunity with the mindset that my skills could adapt to any situation or vision. I was eager to please and overly optimistic, thinking that I could bridge any gap in expectations or perspectives.
However, as I began to take on a more diverse clientele, I encountered clients whose visions didn’t align with my values or style. There were times when I found myself pushing against a wall, trying to force a connection that simply wasn’t there. I realized that not every client was the right fit for me, and that was a tough pill to swallow.
It wasn’t just about the work; it was about the collaborative energy that needed to exist for the art to thrive. Sometimes, despite my best efforts, the visions were incompatible. I learned that it’s perfectly okay to acknowledge that some mismatches are just part of the process.
