We were lucky to catch up with Theresa Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Theresa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most recent and meaningful project is writing a six-week Bible Study, The Posture of Victory: Finding True Peace amidst Our Everyday Battles. The following provides some background on writing this study:
While standing in my kitchen, my sister and I discussed the powerful concept of victory in Christ. She shared an inspiring talk she had heard on Christ’s victory, and I enthusiastically agreed with her. A few days later, I found myself battling lies that swirled in my mind so fast my head spun. I might have exploded if I heard one more person exclaim, “We have victory in Jesus!” I later realized something crucial that many people overlook in their Christian walks: proclaiming victory is one thing, but walking confidently in that victory is another.
As I honestly and vulnerably wrestled with how to apply Christ’s victory to my everyday battles, the Lord brought me to Psalm 63. The last verse struck me:
“But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped.” Psalm 63:11
Psalm 63 provides this beautifully condensed framework of David’s many postures before the Lord that we see throughout the Psalms. The wilderness setting of Psalm 63 helps us make the powerful connection between David’s posture before the Lord, his continuous victories, and our victories.
The key point is that David did not simply turn up the praise music and declare victory as if that were the end of the matter. If it were that straightforward, there would be no need for the preceding ten verses or any other Psalm written by David. He faced lies, rejection, betrayal, depression, and profound grief over many years after God anointed him as the next king of Israel. Despite these challenges, David embraced his victory through six spiritual postures described in Psalm 63. By the end of the Psalm, he confidently declares that victory will ultimately prevail, accompanied by the advancement of his anointing as king long before he reigns as king of Israel.
Through this study, I pray the participant will begin breaking cycles of defeat by cultivating a deep trust relationship with Jesus through these six spiritual postures. This study holds deep meaning and has the potential to transform lives. It is set to release in July of 2025 and I look forward to sharing it with the world!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Sure! I help Christian women, who are tired of spinning their wheels, overcome cycles of defeat so they can boldly live out their faith and calling.
I’m passionate about generational healing and living into who God created us to be today for the betterment of generations tomorrow.
This includes 1) taking responsibility for our healing from past hurts and trauma and trusting Jesus through it. We have all been victims at some point in our lives, but that is not who God says we are. Our healing is vital. It may not be easy, but is incredibly rewarding.
Living into who God created us to be also includes 2) taking risks and living into our gifts and calling. God equipped us with those gifts for a reason. Not only do they cause us to come alive, they impact the world around us when we use them for His glory. Life is an adventure when we trust Jesus with it!
You will find me talking about these topics on Instagram, Facebook, Substsck, my website, and with my sisters on our website, social venues, and podcast.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One thing I have had to unlearn on my writing journey is the idea that walking in my calling through my giftings is a grand, and often, overwhelming hurdle to overcome or someday reach. There are many points of resistance when it comes to writing and creative pursuits because it is frankly vulnerable work. It’s easy to justify being too busy or not ready. However, the correct perspective allows us to forge through those barriers. I’ve learned, instead of putting a project off for “some day”, to trust the creativity that comes in the moments I show up to the work. Those are the moments a small idea or reflection turns into a powerful conversation, article, or book idea. Let go of the outcome and not only trust the process, but HAVE FUN with it!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The following story made a huge difference in my perspective on the uncertainty of my creative work:
One morning, I sat on the couch with my notebook open and a lamp to light the darkened room, questioning, “Why am I doing this?”
I was waking up fifteen minutes earlier each morning because I strongly felt God convicting me to pivot and make room for writing in my busy life, as a homeschool parent.
On this particular morning, that discipline seemed so insignificant. What could God do with fifteen minutes?
His response immediately came. “Your obedience will impact generations to come.”
At that moment, I knew it didn’t matter if I understood what God was asking of me; it only mattered that I obeyed. Would I doubt Him, or would I be willing to go all in?
God is at work in our stories. When we trust Him with it, He will use it for good and for His glory. He will use it for generational healing and blessing! When we show up, day in and day out, we get a job done. All of my writing and best creativity continues to take place in those early morning hours.
When we feel the nudge to move, we must trust that there is a path and a purpose for it, even if we cannot see it yet.
