Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Theresa Kirk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Theresa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally was after I self published my third book and I was found on social media by a reader who asked for more of my work. She was a published author who was signed. At the time I hadn’t written or published a book in a few years so I didn’t think that people still read my work. She connected me with a publisher who had a talk with me about signing to the team and after the conversation, I was inspired to go to the next step and take my writing seriously.
Theresa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I first started writing as a form of therapy in 2015, putting my emotions into poetry helped me process life in a powerful, personal way. A few years later, I transitioned into urban fiction and romance after signing with a publisher, and I’ve been writing ever since.
As a full-time employee, mother, and author, managing my time requires balance and intention. I often write during my commute to and from work and carve out quiet moments at home to keep my creativity flowing. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come in the industry. I’ve published over 40 titles to date. What began as a hobby evolved into something I never expected: a source of income, a community, and a career I truly love. In the beginning, I never imagined writing would turn into a business, but here I am.
My books offer readers an escape; stories that reflect real emotions, relationships, and the kind of drama and love that keep you turning the page. I write for people who want to lose themselves in a good story and feel seen in the characters they meet.
This industry can be tough. Readers have easy access to us and to so many other authors, which is why I stay focused on my writing while also showing up consistently and professionally on social media. I believe in engaging with my readers while still maintaining healthy boundaries t’s all about balance.
I want my readers to know that I’m more than just an author. I have a passion for fashion, too! My personal slogan is: “Sometimes I write, sometimes I slay.” Whether I’m creating characters or curating a look, I bring that same energy, creativity, and authenticity to everything I do.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes, I wish I knew about taking up writing classes online. I knew I wanted to write but writing a book verses a paper are totally different. At first I just wrote freely until I came across Grammarly. This has helped me tremendously with articulating grammar. I also have found a slew of books that help with character development etc.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an author is hearing from readers whether it’s at a book event, through a message on social media, or just someone sharing that I’m their favorite author or that they loved my work.
It also means the world to me when my daughter proudly tells her friends and teachers that I’m an author. Moments like these remind me why I write.
