We recently connected with Theotis Matthews and have shared our conversation below.
Theotis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Being a business owner has truly opened my eyes to a lot of the things you have to sacrifice to prosper. There have been days I’ve wanted to quit, and go back to a regular job; but the thought of working for myself is what continues keep me happy. As a previous corporate America worker, I enjoyed my job; however the longer I stayed working for someone else the more I began to forget who I was. Once the opportunity presented itself I had to take advantage. The best advice I would give to another creative who is afraid to leave their 9-5 would be to go for it, no matter how scary it may seem. You’ll never know your true potential until you try.
Theotis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My brothers and I run a commercial cleaning company. The types of services we provide include basic or maintenance cleaning, deep cleaning, spray disinfection, stripping and waxing, and floor polishing. Our main goal is to keep businesses safe for their customers and employees, while making sure they stay clean and beautiful in the process. We are a family business and are very communicative. So if something goes wrong, we respond quickly to fix it. Many other cleaning companies charge much less for sub-par work, and the products they use are ineffective against certain diseases like Covid19.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We are part of a larger franchise, and of course there is a cost to being part of that franchise. We collectively bought in to the franchise with our own funds and funded the rest through them.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When it comes to social media, we initially struggled to think about what to post. Even though we don’t have a massive audience right now, it seems to grow with each post.
