We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Theo Preiswerk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Theo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
Dealing with people in the creative industry can indeed be challenging due to the presence of egos and poor communication. Managing these dynamics requires a delicate balance of understanding and effective communication skills. It can be a challenge to navigate through different personalities and ensure everyone is on the same page.
One specific instance that stands out is when I transitioned from Germany to the US. The cultural differences and communication styles posed initial challenges. I had to adapt to a more direct and assertive communication approach, which was different from the more indirect and consensus-driven style I was accustomed to in Germany.
To overcome this, I made a conscious effort to learn and understand the cultural nuances, actively listening and observing how others communicated. I also sought feedback and guidance from colleagues who had experience in bridging cultural gaps. By being open-minded and adaptable, I gradually developed effective communication strategies that helped me navigate the challenges and build strong working relationships.
Overall, managing communication challenges in the creative industry and adapting to new cultural environments can be demanding, but with patience, empathy, and a willingness to learn, it is possible to overcome these obstacles and foster positive collaborations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Background: I am a visual artist with a passion for storytelling. I started out as a photographer in Germany, but I made the transition into shooting video because I wanted to create more immersive and engaging experiences. My style is very minimalist, with a heavy focus on colors and the subject. I like to capture extreme moments and interesting people.
Inspiration: I am inspired by the beauty of the world around me, and I am always looking for new ways to tell stories that connect with people on a deeper level. I believe that art has the power to change the world, and I want to use my work to make a positive impact.
Future Goals: I am excited to continue to grow as a visual artist and to create work that matters. I am confident that I can use my skills and interests to make a positive impact on the world.
Specific Ideas: Here are some specific ideas for how I can use my skills and interests to create impactful work:
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I work in the music industry a lot so people are all over the place to be honest. I am a very resilient person due to my background as a college athlete. overall, handling my business, playing college tennis for my university and going to school all in a different country and culture was a challenging aspect of my life. Also palling music videos, writing treatments and organizing. a crew within 6hrs is a good story to flex my resilience haha
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I would say, I am learning g new things about my journey every day but mainly one I=thing id like to tell myself is to not rush the process of my creativity and journey.
