We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Them Fantasies. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Them below.
Alright, Them thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
We all picked up instruments at 8 years old, but we resonated with music since we were infants. As we got older there wasn’t really any other choice for us but to pursue music – you can be good at a lot of things, but once you identify what your passion is, you can’t ignore it. All of us were very fortunate to be able to put the time into mastering our instruments, as well as going to school to study music, Now we’re at a point where we can explore each others creativity, and be fluent in the language that we’ve created with each other.
Them, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We all met when we were studying at music school (Berklee College of Music) back in 2016, and gravitated towards each other because of our eclectic blend of music styles and tastes. Eric (guitar) came from a jazz and classic rock background, while Dominic (bass/vocals) came from grunge and alternative rock music. When Max (drums) came into the picture, he brought a very charismatic approach leaning towards indie rock and j-pop, and was kind of the glue that cemented the blending of styles that would create our own unique sound that we have today.
We really love having very approachable pop melodies, while still pushing the boundaries of the harmony and chord choices. It’s almost like a game with each other to see how far we can push it!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We would say seeing how our fans interact and resonate with what we’ve created in our living room. We’ve had thousands of people comment on how our songs have saved their relationships or changed their lives, and that to us is such a gratifying thing. To know we made a positive impact on somebody – what more can we ask for?
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Letting a song be what it is. We had to unlearn a level of trying to create music we thought other people would like, and just do what we want or do what the music calls for. We have to step aside and let the music happen. If we’re true to what we want, people will see that and resonate with it in their own way.
