We recently connected with The Too Late and have shared our conversation below.
The Too Late, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
A lot of people ask where the name of our band ‘The Too Late’ came from and if it was because we started gigging and producing music in our mid 20’s. Despite this, it wasn’t actually the reason for the name of the band. We do often question if we started too late but the truth is, I don’t think we did start too late. We started as a duo (Ryan and Connor) and have now developed into a five piece. In terms of song writing and confidence in performing live, I feel we weren’t fully ready until the point that we started. Having met the other members of the band, we feel that happened at the right time also. We truly believe that we all came together as a group at the right time to take the project to the next level.
We are often complimented on how good we are live and I think that is because we are a tight knit group who have a common goal to work hard and succeed. We strive to be better and improve as a band at every given step. So the answer is No, we started at the right time and we wouldn’t change.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey, we are The Too Late. A five piece indie-pop band from Glasgow, Scotland. Ryan (Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar), Connor (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Donal (Drums/Musical Director), Matthew (Keys) and Jack (Bass/Vocals). We originally started as a duo but over time are now a five piece. We have a niche sound and take influence from different genres of music. We have five members who are multi-instrumentalists and have a diverse music taste. We take inspiration from The 1975, Picture This, Fleetwood Mac, Sam Fender and many more.
We started in 2021 as a duo with little experience in music and performing. We released our first single ‘One Hit Love’ in October 2021 and began to write more and more songs. We released 2 singles in the first half of 2022 and went onto release our debut EP ‘Sunday Lovin’ in 2022. In this time we began to build the band to start performing live. We added Donal and Matthew in 2022 and then Jack in 2023. We played our first gig as a band in Glasgow in March 2023 and then went onto play multiple throughout the year in Glasgow. We began 2024 with a headline gig in St Lukes in Glasgow, which was a big step for us and now were lined up to play Edinburgh and multiple festivals around Scotland.
We love performing and putting on a show and we aim to make every gig better and better for anyone in the audience. We aim to release more music in 2024 and get our name out there throughout the world.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We write music in order to provide some form of happiness to anyone in the world whether it’s through streaming or in person live. If we can improve even one persons day through our music then that’s an amazing reward. We release all of our songs onto Spotify, Apply Music etc and we can track where our songs get listened to. In the past year we have had over 33,000+ streams and have been listened to in 73 different countries throughout the world. As a small band from Scotland, who only started gigging in March 2023, we have had our songs played all over the world in countries we would never have imagined. We have played some amazing venues in Glasgow, that we never would have thought we would have played this soon. The best part about this is the people who come to see us perform. This is a feeling you can’t beat. People enjoying our music really does mean absolutely everything.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The aim is to continue growing and improving and hopefully get to a point where so many people all over the world enjoy our music and relate to it in a way that can we can have a positive impact on their life. Yes, we would love to tour the world and play in all the famous venues but the most important thing is that we can make people feel something through our music.
