We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful The Reverent Few. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with The Reverent below.
Hi The Reverent, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I’ll always attribute my folks to my inherent self-worth, but it did come from little league sideline cheers or in the way movies paint supportive parents. They offered a real life look into pain, suffering, heartache, loss – I had front row seat to their vulnerability, even if it was hard to witness. It was such a gift to see someone so human, so fallible. They were very blue collar, hard workers and ingrained grit and tenacity. More than anything though their greatest gift to me was the space they allowed so I could navigate my own heart. They trusted me, that I trusted myself and that was paramount. I am incredibly grateful for their willingness to show me who they really were, scars and all. It’s given me the capacity to really unconditionally love those around me and channel my emotions through song.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Nick & I met in Chicago in the spring of 2011. We bonded over old soul tunes and forged The Reverent Few together. The band was on fire and we were making a name for ourselves in Chicago, but family reasons called us to Austin in 2013. Nicks dad was battling ALS so we packed up and headed south to be closer. Our move was heavy and we had to start over completely. We drove down here in a little Chevy Malibu. That car was filled to the brim with all of our gear, guitars and some clothes. We didn’t even bring a coat! It was really humbling and in hindsight, necessary. We both lost a parent in quick succession of one another. All the while were re-vamping our band in a new city, trying to earn our keep making music, building residencies, touring back to the Midwest, recording self-produced EP’s in our apartment, and working part-time jobs to boot! There was this tectonic shift in our losses and it really drove home how we approached music. It became our vehicle to catharsis and healing. Our band changed shape and we rotated members through the years but when we met Ashlyn Shanafelt, our drummer in the summer of 2019 something clicked. It wasn’t just sonically but there’s this familial feeling, it was an instant connection between the three of us. Her drumming is pocket heavy and she’s incredibly musical. I think the synergy of our band and heartbeat behind why we play music is the magic to our sound. There’s a soul element, gospel shouts, Nicks’ fiery guitar, it feels dangerous and vulnerable all at once.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a band, we like to set the big and small goals to get us where we want to be in the next week, month, or year, We hold each other accountable and check in daily. We are a team and a family, we break bread together and cook dinner, we write, record and rehearse weekly. We are taking our fist songwriting retreat in New Mexico in a few weeks and really looking forward to more exploration as a band, sonically and personally.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is to be received on the other end of a song. I don’t mean applause and admiration, but to reach somebody who really needs it, to resonate from where you are under the lights to the underdog in the crowd. It can be terrifying to be vulnerable in those settings but it’s necessary. It shows others how to be brave and chase their dreams. Our biggest goal is to make people FEEL something. We all love to travel and this creative journey is constant connector to new people and places. We’re really grateful to be connected to ourselves enough to really pursue the things that move us.
