We recently connected with The Perez Bros. and have shared our conversation below.
Perez Bros , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
We started drawing at a very young age, probably around 2 years old. During school, we would always be doodling in our notebooks. We’d always made sure to take an art class for an elective. Our senior year in High School came, and we weren’t really sure if we wanted to go to college. It was our Art teacher that suggested we apply to art school. We weren’t really interested in anything else, so we applied. We didn’t think that we’d get accepted but we did. We began to navigate school individually, but then later quickly realized that we had the same interests and style so we started to work as a team. It was in Art school where we began our artistic career.
Perez Bros, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We were born in Lynwood, CA and raised in South Gate, CA. We grew up around car lovers. Our dad always had lowriders, He would buy one, fix it up, sell it, then do it all over again. Our uncle was the same way but with muscle cars, in particular, Mustangs. We would go to car shows and cruise nights with our dad all the time, and to see races at Irwindale with our uncle. So we’ve always been into cars. In art school, one of our professors told us “paint what you know”, so we decided to paint the Los Angeles car culture. In the beginning, we painted both the Lowrider and Mustang car culture, but we quickly began to shift our focus mainly on the lowriders. We felt more involved in that culture, so we realized we can create more impactful paintings. We paint landscapes about Lowriders, focusing on the people that make up that culture. Our mission statement is to inspire the youth to not only pursue art, but pursue their creative instincts. Because one can do anything and go anywhere with art.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is without a doubt, inspiring people. It always feels unreal when we get messages from people telling us how much we inspire them and to keep going.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We don’t have a particular story, but in the beginning when we started showing our paintings in galleries, they wouldn’t sell. We could have just gave up and done something else, but we kept going and painting what we love. Eventually they began to sell.
