We caught up with the brilliant and insightful The Maraschinos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, The thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Kelly – In my mind I had no choice, there was only one thing that I really wanted to do in life, preform. Not to sound like a cheesy cheeseball, but, I knew this ever since I was born. Yeah, I picked up hobbies and jobs along the way, but it was always to support my true dream. I was so extroverted when I was a kid, singing and dancing in front of crowds of strangers, convinced I was the next hit pop star. It developed into something more professional when I took the action as an adult to put myself out there. I joined my sister (Natalie) in her music endeavors and piece by piece we formed this kick ass band! Now I get to do what I love surrounded by the people I love.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Natalie – I was fortunate enough to have supportive parents who were able to get me into guitar lessons when I was a kid. That was my launch into the music industry and ever since my first guitar recital I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. At the time I had no idea that this dream I had would lead me into a career with an amazing band of talented women who all have the same aspirations as me. What I think sets us apart from others is how supportive we all are of each other. We have each other backs in a way that makes me I feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and confident enough to take risks. Our relationship with each other also bleeds into our stage presence in our live performances and that is what I’m most proud of. Being in The Maraschinos makes the 12 year old Natalie inside me, that dreamed of a career like this, so very proud.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Jensen- I feel like an important goal for myself is to always keep learning and getting better. I grew up with music and singing, but am a self taught drummer! I’ve only been playing for a year, so I want to keep growing and getting better and better, not only for myself, but for the band! As for the band itself, I really feel like it is all about being true to ourselves. Putting our love and passion and experiences into our music. Making sure we stay true to who we are is what I feel is going to make us stand out, as not only a band, but as an all girl band!!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Kyleigh- The most rewarding part of being in a band, or really being a musician in general, is coming together with other musicians and sharing the language. I’ve made some lifelong friends from being a musician, and I truly believe it’s because music bonds us together in a way nothing else can. When you’re in the middle of a set on stage, or even just in rehearsal, there’s a unique magic that happens between musicians. Listening to music is wonderful of course, but making music is where it’s at for me.
Kristen- For me, the human connection is the most rewarding aspect. Whether it be with the people consuming your art or the people you work with, there are unique connections that are formed. The connection between bandmates is a key element in the creative process and knowing that we have developed and are continuing to develop connections with each other is rewarding and I believe is helping set us up for success.
