We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Goodman Twins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Goodman Twins, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
We got our first jobs as pharmacists about 1.5 years after we graduated from pharmacy school in May 2018. We know this may seem a bit unorthodox to some, but it was perfect timing for us because we were unfulfilled and unaware of our futures. During the fall of 2018, we moved to Miami, FL, to further our higher education by pursuing a master’s degree in public health (health policy & management).
It took hundreds of rejections, no responses, and dead-end connections from potential employers and recruiters in other fields besides pharmacy. We did not know where we wanted to settle, and we did not know God’s perfect will for our lives. Once we received the gift of salvation and understood what it meant to be born-again believers of Jesus Christ, we received counsel from our church leaders (Overseer Prophet Daniel Powell, Sr. & Prophetess Esther Powell). Our conversations with them made us realize that our decision not to practice pharmacy caused us to fight against how the Lord wanted to bless us and how He wanted to use us to be a blessing to other people.
When we finally decided to reapply for pharmacist jobs in October of 2019, many people, including family members and close friends, stated that we would never work for the same employer and would never be able to work alongside each other. However, we both were confident that we heard the Holy Spirit speak to us concerning our careers and purpose. Therefore, we remained steadfast and unwavering in our faith which led us to an interview and job offers on the same day as our interviews.
This one “yes” was just the fuel to launch us into who we are reckoned to become. Today, we are glad that we ended up where we did for our first jobs in our career field. We are appreciative of our humble beginnings and have realized we had to start somewhere. Our first jobs allowed us to gain understanding, knowledge, and wisdom about the function and operations of the profession of pharmacy. The profession of pharmacy has the potential to expand tremendously. We believe pharmacists are underutilized and often overlooked but are essential to the next move in improving the quality and value of healthcare for all.
Goodman Twins, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are known as the Twins, Dr. Amber & Dr. Ashley, and Prophetess Amber & Prophetess Ashley (as ordained, licensed ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ). We grew up in Tallahassee, FL, and now claim Tampa, FL, as home.
We are proud of being young professional black women who are emerging leaders for this generation and generations to come. As business women, authors, and speakers, we write and speak from a place of hope, and our work is to serve as a blueprint for many to have the ability to stand during times of storms and trials in life. The main thing we want everyone, our clients, followers, and supporters to know about us, our brand, and our work is that we strive to complete everything with wisdom and in the spirit of excellence. So far, we have released four books since 2020, with many more to come.
Book 1: A Double Portion to Know Him
Book 2: The Outcast Pharmacist
Book 3: Abba Father & Me: A Daily Devotional
Book 4: 30 Things: Twin Tells
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training/knowledge, we believe creativity and open-mindedness are most helpful for succeeding in our field, especially for those who are new or young within the field. Creativity allows room for growth and can assist with creating roles that can benefit an organization or your endeavors. Lastly, knowing how to respect, treat, and work well with others is one of the most helpful skills for succeeding in our field.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
It used to be hard for us to say yes to this question, but as mature women, we would choose the same profession because it is a part of who we are and are called to be. This profession has allowed us to learn from the ground up as young emerging leaders. It has also provided us the opportunity to work as entrepreneurs within a company, and it has disciplined us regarding work ethic, attention to detail, and the importance of listening to others to solve problems and answer questions.
