We were lucky to catch up with The Galaxy Electric recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, The Galaxy Electric thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
When we launched our first album online through Bandcamp, we did not expect what happened. We had a small mailing list from doing some regional DIY touring, but had just started out and there was no Tiktok, virality or marketing plan in place. We didn’t really know how to foster a community in any way. But Bandcamp, the platform itself, boosted our first single off the album by putting it on their Blog playlist. Back then, this was a huge deal. They were considered purveyors of the culture. And the biggest spike in our listenership happened on this day. Because of this, we sold the vinyl of our first album to new fans around the globe. It was such an exciting and validating time. And it pushed us to learn tools outside of our musical craft, like digital marketing, in order to foster all these new fans that we couldn’t reach in person, and grow our community even more. It was the spark that lit our fire and has kept us motivated ever since.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We are an experimental electronic music duo. We met as solo artists, and even though we fell in love and got married, we always said we would keep our music separate – that we shouldn’t mix business and pleasure. But that didn’t last very long at all. All our projects started to blend together and we realized that both our relationship and our music were made better by doing it together. Each enhanced the other. So we intentionally decided to start a new project together. In 2014, we made it official and released our first single. That led to our first album, and we’re five albums deep now. The process of creating together and the journey we’ve been on is the most fulfilling part of it all. We get to decide everything together, our imaginations and ambitions combine into what ends up in our fans hands (and ears!). It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it gives us so much purpose and joy to live our lives this way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We’ve stayed fiercely independent as a band. This is because we always want to keep our direct connection with our listeners and supporters. Every path that involves middle men or labels, etc, always disconnects us from what matters – being able to make those creative decisions, and have our fans be part of the process. And it’s really symbiotic in that our fans are fiercely protective of us being able to stay true to our artistic vision – which doesn’t always make sense to executives – and we want to stay fiercely loyal to our connection with them. So while sometimes we can get enticed by the idea of certain offers, we always keep ourselves grounded in our mission to stay independent. Our fans have supported us the way labels used to support new artists. They keep us inspired, but also humble and honest. We know we have them to thank for any success we’ve had and we don’t want to let them down by losing sight of our vision for this project. They are so awesome in letting us know when we nail it too. We couldn’t ask for a better support group!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being musicians, especially this project – is when we can physically hold our ideas in our hands – a CD or a vinyl, etc, and know that our fans are getting the experience of what was in our minds and hearts. That whole process to get our music into that form is incredible, but at the end of the day, knowing our music lives in our fans collection – in their homes, on their stereos, in their cars – and that one day, they will even pass these things down to their children or grandchildren – is just so incredibly mind blowing. Music is the ideas, but also the feeling and memories people have when they’ve listened to it. It has real meaning in people’s lives and we’re so so lucky to have these stories from our fans and to know the impact it’s making for them.
