We were lucky to catch up with The Fuzz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi The Fuzz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The Fuzz curates a space for artists of all kinds to showcase their talent and build a lasting network of supporters and collaborators. When we first moved to Los Angeles, we were shocked to find the amount of spaces that required artists to pay to play or display. We wanted to create an event that allowed all the artists to be compensated fairly and walk away with a community. Unlike a lot of popular showcases, we didn’t want to discriminate based on clout but give music and art of all forms a home. Seeing the community, collaborations, friends and jobs that have come from these shows is amazing and worth all of the time, effort and money we put into making them happen.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Fuzz is curated primarily by the musicians “your friend juniper” & “Fairhazel” with the help of Jamichael Frazier who runs the live jam that happens at the end of every show. We had our first Fuzz event in January of 2020, and watched this beautiful community of musicians, artists, poets and creatives of all mediums grow over time.
Each show features three musicals acts and multiple vendors, including a pop up art gallery, local tattoo artists, clothing consignment and more! The night closes with Jammy’s Jams, where anyone can bring an instrument and showcase their talent.
We are currently taking The Fuzz around the world as “The Fuzz on The Run”. We’re hosting a show in Nashville in October and have plans for shows in London, Toronto and New York. We love hosting The Fuzz in unusual places and are always looking for new spaces, so please reach out if you have a cool spot to host a show! We are also looking to have industry representatives for all art forms in our audience so our creatives can get even more from the show!
We take art submissions over email ([email protected]). We welcome music, dancers, visual art, digital art, spoken word, poetry…really any art form you can think of! You can follow us on Instagram @wearethefuzz to see the vibes!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Because our shows began in 2020, we faced the pandemic pretty early on in our show run. We had to take a huge break from the live shows, which was really heartbreaking, seeing as our first three shows had already shown signs of real success. People were starved of art, and artists were starved of opportunities. In order to keep momentum and support the local art community we started a series of video sessions called At The Gate, where we “social-distance” filmed local musicians playing a short live set. We then moved to the app Clubhouse and started a series called Evening Tapes, where we featured three musicians a week. Our love of creating spaces for musicians and artists never died, and we were so happy once we could start having shows again. It was a beautiful thing to watch our community flood right back in to The Fuzz, and grow in an even more amazing way.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
We live in a world now where people really don’t have to pay for art. With streaming platforms and AI it’s extremely hard for artists of all kinds to get compensated fairly. Artists need to follow through from fans and their community. That means following them on social media, streaming their music, going to their gallery shows and concerts, and supporting them financially in whatever way you can. Instead of staying at home, watching Netflix, go out and support art!
