Matt, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
How Solum Space Law Got Its Name
Naming a business is both an exciting and daunting process, and for me, it was about finding a name that truly captured the heart of what my firm stands for. Solum Space Law emerged as a reflection of the firm’s dual commitment to personal injury law and real estate/land use law, while embodying the broader philosophy of advocacy and justice that drives our work.
The word “Solum”, meaning “land” in Latin, represents a strong foundation—both literally and figuratively. In our real estate and land use practice, we help developers, property owners, and tenants navigate the intricate legal frameworks tied to the spaces they own or inhabit. But “land” isn’t just about property—it’s also about ensuring a stable foundation for people’s lives, a theme that resonates just as strongly in our personal injury work.
“Space” adds another layer of meaning. It symbolizes the physical and emotional spaces that our clients occupy, whether that’s recovering from a devastating injury or seeking justice after an accident. In our personal injury practice, the concept of “space” reflects our dedication to protecting clients in every aspect of their recovery journey—ensuring their physical, financial, and emotional well-being are addressed. It also speaks to our commitment to securing justice in the broader spaces of life, making sure clients feel empowered and supported throughout the legal process.
Personal injury is deeply personal—every case represents someone’s story of struggle and resilience. That’s why I wanted the firm’s name to reflect our promise: to fight for justice for injured clients and help them rebuild their lives with dignity and care. At Solum Space Law, you don’t just get case managers or associates—you get me, personally advocating for you, every step of the way.
The name also mirrors the way we approach our work—with a commitment to justice, technology, and efficiency. Whether it’s helping accident victims secure the compensation they deserve or working with a landowner on a development project, Solum Space Law stands for excellence and results.
In short, the name reflects both what we do and who we are: a firm dedicated to protecting people, their rights, and the spaces they call home—whether it’s on the ground, in the courtroom, or beyond.

Matt, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those unfamiliar with me or my firm, Solum Space Law, I’m Matt Kohanbash, an attorney with a deep background in real estate, land use, and personal injury law. Growing up surrounded by the real estate world and earning a degree in Policy, Planning, and Development with an emphasis on Real Estate from the University of Southern California, I’ve always had a passion for understanding and navigating the complexities of property law.
My professional journey has spanned roles at small and medium-sized firms, in-house counsel positions, the city attorney’s office, and big law. Each step gave me a unique perspective on client needs and the importance of tailored solutions. I’ve worked on everything from multimillion-dollar real estate transactions to guiding clients through personal injury cases with compassion and diligence.
Solum Space Law was born out of a desire to combine this experience with a more personal and client-focused approach. We offer legal services in:
• Real Estate and Land Use: Supporting developers, landlords, and individuals with transactions, title reviews, landlord-tenant disputes, and compliance with California’s intricate property laws.
• Personal Injury: Helping individuals recover after car accidents and other injuries, with a unique commitment to personal attention—I personally oversee every case, ensuring clients feel supported and informed.
What sets us apart is our commitment to providing direct, individualized service. Unlike larger firms where cases can feel impersonal, we prioritize building relationships and delivering solutions that make a real difference. Clients often tell us they feel empowered and better equipped to handle challenges after working with us, whether financially, physically, or with newfound confidence in their legal position.
What I’m most proud of is the trust our clients place in us. Knowing we’ve helped someone achieve justice or navigate a difficult situation is the most rewarding part of this work. Solum Space Law isn’t just about legal expertise—it’s about making a meaningful impact in our clients’ lives and helping them move forward stronger than before.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Three works have profoundly shaped my management and entrepreneurial philosophy, as well as my personal growth:
First, “Thinking, Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman and “The Undoing Project” by Michael Lewis have significantly influenced how I approach problem-solving and decision-making. Kahneman’s exploration of the two systems of thinking—one fast and intuitive, the other slow and deliberate—has made me more aware of cognitive biases and more thoughtful in evaluating complex issues. Lewis’s engaging account of Kahneman and Tversky’s groundbreaking work deepened my appreciation for clear communication, collaboration, and the ability to challenge conventional thinking—qualities that are essential in running a client-centered law firm.
Second, David Goggins’ “Can’t Hurt Me” continues to inspire me to tackle challenges head-on and push beyond my perceived limits. Goggins’ philosophy of seeking out discomfort and constantly striving for growth resonates deeply with me. Whether it’s training for my first marathon, the LA Marathon, or starting my own law firm, I draw on his relentless mindset to stay committed to difficult but meaningful endeavors. These challenges are part of a broader mission: creating what I believe the legal industry lacks—tailored, innovative, and deeply empathetic services that truly meet clients’ needs.
Goggins has instilled in me a belief that growth comes from doing hard things, and this philosophy has driven me to continuously improve—not just for myself, but for the clients and communities I serve. Balancing strategic thinking from Kahneman and Tversky’s work with Goggins’ ethos of resilience and action has been transformative in both my personal journey and my professional approach.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has undoubtedly been word of mouth and referrals from former clients. There’s nothing more rewarding than having someone trust you enough to recommend your services to their friends, family, or colleagues. It’s a testament to the relationships I’ve built and the results I’ve been able to deliver. Many of my clients have expressed their appreciation for the clear communication, personal attention, and tailored solutions they received during their cases, whether it was a personal injury matter, a landlord-tenant dispute, or complex real estate and land use issues. These positive experiences have led to a steady stream of new business, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.
That said, as my practice grows, I’m focused on expanding my reach through social media and strategic marketing. This year, one of my primary goals is to leverage platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and other digital tools to showcase the firm’s expertise, share insights, and connect with potential clients in a more dynamic way. I believe this will help position Solum Space Law as a trusted resource not just for individuals who’ve heard about me through word of mouth, but also for those seeking legal guidance in the broader market.
Still, I firmly believe that the cornerstone of my business will always be past work and relationships. Good work speaks for itself, and I’m committed to maintaining the same level of excellence and care that has brought me success so far. Whether it’s through referrals or a growing digital presence, my focus will always remain on providing exceptional legal services and making a positive impact on my clients’ lives.
