We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful The End At Last. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with The End At Last below.
Alright, The End At Last thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Our band has continually had to figure out “how to be a band” just like any others that have come before us. For us, we’re all starting off though in our mid 20’s and 30’s which is outside the norm. Combined with the growing abilities to do things digitally and record from makeshift home setups, we first set out to learn how to create music we were happy with before ever learning to play it together in a live context. Aside from simply learning how to utilize the hardware/software, we had to learn how to communicate with each other to be successful (which is a continuous process). Having a group of people all be aligned on a common goal is not an easy task when doing things creatively, as everyone has their own passions being considered. The push and pull of these passions coming together and having to make compromises along the way is something that doesn’t really have a shortcut to figuring out.
The End At Last, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a heavy music band called The End At Last, claiming Dayton, OH as our collective home. Since our initial bedroom inception in early 2022, we’ve been working to craft a sound that we’re proud to represent. Through a couple years of makeshift home studio sessions and group hangouts, we self-produced our first self-titled EP as a way of getting the ball rolling. This brought multiple lineup changes in the journey of figuring out how we wanted to bring this sound forward in a live context, which we’re hoping to start showcasing in 2025.
Being a new band, our sound is constantly developing and will continue to do so, but we sit somewhere in the metal core/hardcore adjacent space among the likes of Boundaries, Knocked Loose, Kublai Khan, Varials, Harms Way, and Left Behind to name a few. That being said, nothing is off the table and we draw inspiration from a wide variety of music across the group, and will strive to bring this forward in the coming years.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
In being a creative, I believe the most rewarding aspect is having a finished product that once resided only in your mind. The driving force behind the creation of everything I do starts as a small idea that nags away at me. The process of creating anything presents many moments of triumph and frustration, but in the end, having a finished product that you built from what was once nothing is an incredible feeling.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For us, the mission mostly resides in the question of, “why not now?”
As individuals, our band members have all spent the majority of our lives as solo bedroom hobbyists. At the first idea of starting a band, we were met with a lot of “why’s” as we’re all in our 20’s and 30’s with careers and even families. But with being a creative, yearning for more, and knowing that we’re not getting any younger, we instead challenged the why’s with “why not.”
In that spirit, we’ve now released an EP that we’re proud of, are looking to play some live gigs (something we have little to no experience doing), and want to continue this journey of creation and sharing it with others.
