We caught up with the brilliant and insightful The Cherry Club a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, The Cherry Club thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
We learned how to navigate musicianship by staying consistent. There’s many aspects of being a musician that leave people feeling uncertain about the path they’ve chosen, but staying consistent helps us learn new things every day. We also rely on each other and the friendships we’ve created to grow, because with learning new things comes a lot of failure and a lot of people to lean on in those times. I like to say in the music industry, nobody knows what they’re doing. So part of music is learning new ways to approach it every day. There’s no secret sauce to achieving artistry, but our method has been consistency, friendship, and creating goals.

How did you build your audience on social media?
The approach that we took from the beginning, which has served us very well, is to not think about it too hard. I think social media is a beast, but you have to treat it like it’s no big deal, being cringe. We posted everything and didn’t overanalyze if the music sounded perfect. We decided to just show it all, ourselves, and the authenticity that we were able to show has translated into garnering people who like us for us. It has also allowed us the space to build a brand, or at least a concept of a brand. By letting go of the cloud that haunts above social media posting, we had a lot of freedom around how we present ourselves. We also stayed consistent, post a lot, we were posting twice a day at one point.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is the community that we’ve been able to build and see grow. It starts very small, but it has been a pleasure seeing it form. I remember the first time I saw somebody singing our lyrics back to us, it was at a festival in Joshua Tree called Giant Rock. That’s a moment I’ll never forget, all the dancing people in the crowd and they knew our songs. There’s a lot of difficult moments in music, but the people we meet definitely make it worth it. We have really grown to love our fans deeply, the ones that come to every show and the ones who came out to meet us for the first time. We’ve also grown to love a lot of bands locally, there’s a great scene in LA and we like playing shows with everyone. It’s an amazing thing to be inspired by everyone around us. LA has pockets of really great artists and we really admire a lot of those. So overall the most rewarding aspect of being an artist has been the community we’ve built and the people that we deeply care for.
