We recently connected with Thata Cinelli and have shared our conversation below.
Thata, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Since I start my business of Party Design & Decoration in the USA, I look for a place where people can have their parties in a place that looks like “at home” without the stress of having it “at home”. But a place where they can invite a small group of people to celebrate and gather on any occasion, bringing their own beverage and food, having help from a Personal Consultant to guide them on what they may need, and helping with details like how to display their food and beverage, how to set up a table, etc. with elegance and freshness.
A place that is a comfortable and safe space, that looks like they are receiving friends & family at their own homes (or better!).
And, because I DO NOT FIND “THE ONE”, I decided to transform my initial Office & Showroom in THAT SPACE! Since the COVID situation came, and the City of Olathe starts to remodel the Creek behind our Property, I and my husband decided to remodel our space bringing the atmosphere of 1900 when it had been built to a perfect space for an Event Space dedicated for small and cozy gatherings!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Speaking a little bit about my career as a Party Design & Decorator, I start it helping other Expat Wifes in Thailand (where I lived abroad for almost 5 years, before the USA) by organizing Parties, Events, and Reunions for Charity bases. Then, in 2014, when I came with my family husband, and 3 kids, to this wonderful Country, after a couple of months of adjustments, I decided that was time to find something to do. That was when I came with the opportunity to throw my first Party, for a friend: a BABY SHOWER. And it was a tremendous success and the rest is history… ;-)
Of course, it was not so easy… especially because a lot of people in America like DIY, and is complicated prove to them that is not the best choice, when you can pay for someone who has the experience, vision, and creativity, to do something new and beautiful to you, removing from your back all the stress, doubts, and hard work.
My goal is to have my Clients fresh and free to enjoy their own parties and events as they are their own guests!
And I think I am succeeding in it! Wowing my clients ad their friends and family.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m actually an Attorney, graduated from Brazil a long time ago. Because of my husband’s work, we had as a family to move around, and finally, we came to the USA. For this reason, I decided to stay home with my kids were little ones… and after they got older and more independent, I felt was time to come back to work again. But, the Certificate and language were a barrier at that time… and I felt more secure and comfortable choosing something else: the design and decoration came instantly, as an artist I am since I am a kid. This is a special Gift from God, and I can’t say “no” to that!
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Definitely, COVID was a marc for me and my Family. Because at that time people were not allowed to have parties, and all Events get canceled, without a “new date”. At that time, for example, I had a WEDDING that need to be rescheduled 2 times! And I lose a couple of other Parties during the process too… almost 2 years!! I had to think of a PLAN B, offering my Clients “BALLOON ARRANGMENTS AT YOUR DOOR” where we make all the contacts online, on the phone, etc., and I set up the decorations at the front door of their house… without personal contact, using masks, etc. Not easy, but we made it!
During this time – as mentioned – we bring back our DREAM BUSINESS of having a SPECIAL SPACE for parties and Events, found an Architect, and a Contractor, grabbed some saved money from our pockets…. worked hard with the City of Olathe, and… we finally opened it on the last April 29th.
THE YELLOW DOOR EVENT SPACE is a baby yet… but day by day we are improving it to give our Clients a special and unique environment where they can enjoy each minute together with their friends and family.
