We recently connected with Thana Hickman and have shared our conversation below.
Thana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I started by volunteering at several residential non profits and then started my own mentoring program but quickly learned the need for housing for the demographic that we serve.

Thana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Thana Hickman-Simmons, a native of South Chicago, navigated the challenges of
teen motherhood while pursuing higher education. She earned a bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration amidst unwavering support from her family and godmother, Ms.
Viola. Inspired by her journey, Thana founded Viola’s House in 2008, providing
mentorship to young mothers. Today, nestled in South Dallas, Viola’s House, which is a
maternity home for pregnant teen moms, has grown into a haven, accommodating
mothers and babies while offering round-the-clock support from licensed counselors,
mentors, and educators.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Leadership development and education is the key to building leaders.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
