We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Thair Ramirez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Thair below.
Thair, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The learning process is messy and there’s no use in resisting that. The more you embrace the messiness, and have your mind wide open to your own mistakes without judging them and yourself, the quicker you’ll improve and learn from the experience
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Almost a decade ago at 20 years old, I got into screenwriting to create roles for myself. That was my strategy for an acting career knowing that pursuing it the traditional way was out of the question for me. But I ended up falling in love with the craft of screenwriting so I decided to focus on that for 4 years until the opportunity presented itself to make my first short film. I met friends whose projects I’ve also acted in but my focus entirely shifted to being a writer/director. I never got into this to be a writer or director for hire. It was always about creating my own projects and helping my filmmaker friends with theirs.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The passion for the story on the page and my vision for how I bring it together on the screen. And the tribe I’ve attracted through my projects. It’s fulfilling to be inspired by an actors talent and showcasing it through having them bring your character to life. The actors I’ve worked with have become some of my closest friends and my editor happens to be one of my best friends and he’s also a director so it’s great not being alone in this journey
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a huge jump in budget for my fourth short film. It’s been the biggest mountain I’ve had to climb. Every doubt imaginable, the main one being, “is this too good to be true.” The better everything kept coming together, the scarier it got. I was terrified of dropping the ball. But that’s also what makes it exhilarating. Regardless of the outcome, the journey, relationships, memories, it’s all worth it, as long as you do it for genuine passion and not vain motivation
