We recently connected with TGYE and have shared our conversation below.
TGYE, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
At times I would say so, yes. I understand that my music/creativity has made me feel misunderstood because I always want to be as real as I can be in my vulnerability as a human being. I find that I am very honest with what goes on in my head and I work on being descriptive for those that support this part of me in my journey. I know, through my beliefs, that everything is in Gods timing. Having trust in patience allows me to let go of being misunderstood and accept that time is right, but not everyone’s time is “my time”, and vice versa.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m an artist, hands down, like I am a full creative being. I record music, I work on producing my own beats, I create art work as a part of my sense of freedom. First and foremost, I love music. I love the idea of bringing something to fruition sonically. Just in general I love creating, music happens to be one of my main sources of creativity, you know? I grew around my father who was heavy into music and making his own beats, looping records, recording songs, so forth and so on. I was able to be around people like 9th wonder, rapsody, skazdigga (a DJ for Big Daddy Kane) or even Rsonist (a producer for Dipset). I was able to experience so much of history in the making at such a young age. I believe being around these people and having these experiences and my parents having a strong relation to culture, and of course many more things, but these are things that stuck with me all through out my life. I remember these things and they tie in to my identity now as a being but an artist as well.
In this case, I believe what sets me apart is how I approach creativity. All of my works I take time on thinking and planning how it can and will affect people. It’s hard for me to just do something out of spite or just randomly without a thought of the message that’s being promoted. Your identity is like your brand, you know? I hold that dearly and as I provide the “product”, such as the music, I want it to be something that you are amazed and in some way elevated by. So I take time, because the message is always important, and I don’t want to continue to spread a message that isn’t healthy. That’s never my intention, and I’m proud that I can stay true to what I love doing and at least be caring about how I treat my music.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my eyes, I would say to just be open to all the possibilities. Things aren’t going to be how we want them to be in the snap of a second, so I would just say be open. Be open to people, be open to new ideas, beliefs, perspectives. Lol, I keep saying it, but just be open and don’t be so quick to judge everything. I know it’s apart of human nature because we naturally are weary of our surroundings and it’s a form of protecting ourselves, and that’s fair, there is nothing wrong with that. We should allow our selfs to open up and let loose a little. Breathe, you know?
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFT’s are pretty cool. I like the idea of pushing culture towards a new light and way of living. I think they’re an interesting way of collecting money. My opinion on the art itself, is a little different. Some of the art I’ve seen is basic in my opinion, but I have seen some pretty cool 3D render NFT’s and those are really nice.
