Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Teyquil Skelton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Teyquil, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I realized I wanted to pursue a professional creative path was at the age of 6yrs. old. Music has been a part of my DNA since birth and for as long as I’ve been alive it’s all I’ve ever dreamed of doing/becoming and that feverish passion continues to burn to this day. I love the 80’s era of pop and new wave/EDM and within my own music creation, I incorporate those elements developing my own style that I inherited from that genre. Practice makes perfect and I’m a firm believer of repeated practices and that instillment of work only makes you better with time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, my name is Teyquil and I’m a recording artist from Philadelphia. I’ve been performing since I was a kid and have loved it my whole life. Center stage has been my platform, and it’s felt like home each and every time I was given a chance to entertain. Though music is my passion and fuel, I’ve also garnered ammunition elsewhere to help further my career. One of them was achieving academic success as I took the bull by the horns and rode through some of the deepest, darkest holes that life threw my way during my run with education. However, through strength, dedication and fortitude in the face of adversity, I was able to overcome my trials, tribulations, and massive losses to finally say, “I’ve truly finished what I’ve started.” Accumulating multiple college degrees wasn’t easy by any means, but it is my testament to my story and who I am as an individual who won’t take failure laying down willingly.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me as an artist is being able to create and share what I’ve created with the world. Waking up every day to create music and tell stories through my music is the best career choice for me and the fulfillment in that creation is a happiness I can’t explain. Quite honestly, I think the beauty in that is the fact that it can’t be explained but experienced with others who are affected by your creation and want to be a part of your story in every aspect of your progress and growth moving forward. In my humble opinion, the best part of the volcano is not the eruption itself, but the process it took to get to the climax of it. To me, that’s the reward.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to one day record an album. My mission is work my way through the trenches to make it happen. The way to do that is to continue doing what I’ve always done and that’s to create. I have made some good songs, but there’s still work to be done to make great songs in the future. Again, the process is pivotal, but I have no doubt that I’ll garner my Superbowl win like my Philadelphia Eagles, but it takes time and I’m here for the race no matter what the odds or what people have to say in my journey to the top that I clearly see in the distance.
