Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Teyondra Burch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Teyondra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
The biggest thing that I would change about the education system is students access to resources or opportunities. From my experience as a teacher, as well as a business owner I believe the biggest downfall of the education system is the lack of things students in lower socio-economic environments have access to. Coming from an area that is lower class in comparison to other areas I have seen what is available where money is. I believe that no matter where students go to school or live, they should have all of the same opportunities. Most students in lower areas only have a a few options and more money offers more opportunities. I see it often that when students have access they excel. It can be clubs or sports. I would love it if there was a chance for students to join clubs or teams if their school does not offer it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Teyondra Burch, from Muskegon. MI and I am the owner and operator of Tey’s Tutor Time. In 2015 I transitioned from being a literacy tutor in elementary schools to being a high school paraprofessional, as well as being pregnant. I knew I wanted to still work with elementary age kids and use the skills I obtained, so Tey’s Tutor Time was born. I began working with my friends children and it steadily grew. I now have serviced over 50 children and have an employee. I offer In person and virtual tutoring sessions. I also sell at home learning materials for families who do not wish to utilize tutoring,
What sets me apart from other tutoring companies is that my main goal is to educate parents and build relationships with the families I service. After my sessions with students I take time to review with families and make sure they know what works best for their child.
I am most proud of my drive to be the best I can possibly be for the students and families I serve. I also am very proud of being in business for over 5 years and serving my community.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my biggest builder has been my consistency. I have built most of my clients from word of mouth and that works for me because I always show up for my families. I love to make sure I do things when I say they’ll get done.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that what I was doing was “good enough”. Often, in business good enough is enough, but it’s actually not. I have noticed that when you are in spaces with people know you, good is good enough. I love when my family and friends support what I am already doing, but a push is always needed to elevate. Every day I am growing in ways that not only help my business, but myself as a person. Everything that is done in business needs to be the next best thing. I believe in growing daily to be your best self.
