We recently connected with Texsena Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Texsena , thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
While in esthetician school, I wanted to get more practice with facials. I created a “free facials” event, where clients would come in to get free basic facials so I could get the hands-on experience. One of my classmates had an extra steamer/mag light combo, and she said I could borrow it for the weekend. I used it for the event and the next week, before I could ask her what day and time to bring it back, she texted me and said she was blessing me and my business with the machine!! We were in class on zoom and my face dropped and I instantly started crying. I didn’t expect that at all and it was really sweet of her to do that. She said the look on my face was priceless :) I am forever grateful for that gift to help me get started.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Texsena Scott and I and the owner of J&J Brows, Inc. I have been in business for a year now (I just celebrated my one year anniversary). I got licensed as a microblading artist after a career change. A drastic one. I went from being a journalist to the beauty industry. It’s very rewarding seeing satisfied clients. And even if they’re not satisfied, I will do the necessary changes, with a positive attitude, until they get the results they were looking for. With microblading, I encounter a lot of individuals who either have sparse eyebrows, or none at all. Microblading gives them the natural hair-like strokes that makes it look like they’re their natural eyebrows. I have since expanded my services to facials and waxing.
I also have a cosmetic line, where I sell lip glosses, matte lipsticks, and lip balm. I have a variety of colors that you can choose from. I am also preparing to launch more items so stay tuned!!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Lately, I’ve gotten most of my new clients from Groupon. I had a Groupon for my microblading, facials, and waxing services. In one week, I had maybe 3 or 4 new clients. People are looking for a good deal, and I was looking for the experience and exposure. Groupon is great for both of those reasons.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Before I delved into the microblading business, my focus was on making money. And microblading could do just that. I’ve seen where some artists (in certain areas) would charge $500 and up for their initial services. I calculated the numbers and figured if I had two clients in one week, that would be rent for the month. But as I got deeper into the profession, I found that it’s not as easy as getting certified then start charging clients a large amount of money. You have to put in your work, just like any other profession. Build clientele, practice, and practice some more. And sometimes, you may have to work for a discounted price. But once you are able to get comfortable, then you can increase your price to what you’re worth. I’m still not at $500 yet, and probably won’t get there anytime soon!! But I am continuing to practice, perfect my craft, and build up my clientele.
