Tevyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea

I started the business as a DBA, which is now known as Grayson Accounting Service. I saw how much entrepreneurship was growing out of the pandemic and wanted to be available to support. The intent to start the business has always existed, but that moment in time–post pandemic–gave me the last push I needed. I initially invested into a computer and business cards. From there, I expected calls from potential clients to come in pretty regularly and that was not the case!

The next 4 months were pretty slow, mostly helping family and friends with general bookkeeping advice and practices. I realized that a big part of what I needed to succeed was to be present to my clientele. The decision to hire a bookkeeper or change your accounting system is a big adjustment/decision for small business owners and I wanted the process to be seamless and natural. I began putting effort into being available and present to my clientele and then I secured my first “big” contract a year later.

That contract allowed me the opportunity to begin full-time entrepreneurship and really get things rolling!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

The brand Grayson Accounting Service (G.A.S.) really began in highschool. I knew that I wanted to be in business supporting small business owners early in life. Of course, I learned the details of what that looks like through my experiences and positions held, and I continue to build my understanding everyday. My higher education consists of an Associates degree in Accounting. I have a passion for the analytical side of business derived from a love of numbers and the stories they tell.

For clients, G.A.S looks to offer a variety of solutions starting with bookkeeping and data integrity. We look to enter everything possible into a software system of our clients decision and create reports, systems, and procedures to maintain integrity as the business grows. We also work closely with clients in an advisory position to show what the business metrics present vs. what the operations feel is happening. We work to help clients become more efficient and informed in decision making.

As a born and raised member of the Kalamazoo, Michigan community, I am most proud of the ability to help develop this city for the future. Kalamazoo is currently dealing with a lot of trauma and hurt as violence continues to increase in the black community. I want to be a clear voice and presence advocating for change and prosperity. As we grow, Grayson Accounting Service will be a major supporter of local initiatives for the youth and a partner for change.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

Currently, our best source of clients has been personal referrals. We have reached a level of capacity where we are going to be intentional about expanding into neighboring cities, but our satisfied customers have been the driving force of our growth.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

We are still small and working to get additional funding to continue developing our internal operations, but the initial funding happened from small grants from the city, as well as family support. I am deeply grateful for those that believed in me and allowed me the opportunity to invest back into the business. As we eye the future and look to work with the right funding partner, Grayson Accounting Service will become a staple in entrepreneurship in Southwest Michigan.
