We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tevin Ryles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk Ive ever taken would have to have been moving from Atlanta to Las Vegas for a year and then moving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. My business partner was living in Las Vegas because he was working with the Raiders so I just decided to with him and just make my moves for a while. It was time for a change and to get out of where Ive been my whole life. Moving to LA came from the agency I work for being based in LA and causing me to travel to LA quite often for work. I’ve also recently started doing some acting and the constant back and forth made me realize that it would probably be most beneficial for me to move out here.
Tevin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My main job now outside of my clothing brand has been working for a Public Relations Agency (The Purple Agency) as a publicist (Strategist/Artist Relations), and I do A & R working with a different artist, companies, influencers and things of that nature. I have a clothing brand that my business partner Husani Spann started in 2016 called Oberon Asscher. So I do PR / brand management for my companies (which is what I got my degree in Public Relations with a minor in Entrepreneurship but I’ve ALWAYS been into clothing, fashion, and sneakers. The reason behind the name “Oberon Asscher.” Oberon is a royal bear in German, which is why a bear is our main “mascot/logo.” Asscher is a Diamond that’s cut different and not your average Diamond, which is why that’s our moto/slogan “CUT DIFFERENT.”
Im most proud of me building my rapport and networking my way into the position Im in. My ability to interact, network, and make things happen has helped me tremendously in life. My ability to learn quick and also adapt are things I feel like lift me to do great things and help me to succeed.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think a major time for me pivoting was when I changed my major from Business Management to Communications/ Public relations with a minor in entrepreneurship. Being that growing up I played sports I wanted to stay in the sports field by doing possible sports management but I also was very into entertainment along with wanting to own my own store. My advisor gave me great advice and suggested that I do Communications and Entrepreneurship in order to direct me to the path Im on now and it was well worth it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding thing is the outcome of your work. Making your visions come to fruition and expressing yourself in a way that you really enjoy is an amazing feeling. Makes you appreciate things alot more.
