Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tessa Scissorhands. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tessa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
This feels like such a complex question as a majority of artists and creatives are their own worst critic! But yes, I love that I get to create art every time I go to “work.” Hair is a living and breathing canvas/fiber that is complex to work with.
I had a “regular job” for 10 years+ prior to diving 110% into hair. I worked in the tech industry for that Fruit company, and I would never go back. I am thankful for the days I spent there – I met my fiancé there and some of my friend group. And I learned extremely valuable lessons and gained so much knowledge working there! But I do think doing hair is a regular job too.

Tessa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely, I’d be thrilled to share more about myself and my journey in the beauty industry!
I’m Tessa Scissorhands, and my passion lies in elevating the art of hairstyling through innovative education and creative expertise. My journey began early, ignited by a fascination with cosmetics and the power of ingredients. This curiosity led me backstage at bridal shows for hair and makeup during my school days. As I grew, so did my love for understanding the science behind beauty products and techniques.
My professional path took me to the consumer electronics industry, where I spent a decade with Apple Inc. My time there nurtured my tech skills, from visual aesthetics to advanced problem-solving. In tandem, I ventured into cosmetics by joining Sephora LVMH, honing my skills as a Color Artist.
The culmination of my experiences led me to the beauty industry, where I pursued a cosmetology license in 2019. Fuelled by a thirst for knowledge, I launched Technicolor Education, a platform designed to provide hairstylists with a holistic education that marries the science of hair care with artistic expression.
At Technicolor Education, I specialize in color and hair extensions, offering hands-on, immersive classes. I address the challenges stylists face in maintaining healthy hair and scalp and equip them with advanced techniques that unlock endless possibilities. My goal is to bridge the gap between creativity and science, ensuring every client’s transformation is both stunning and sustainable.
What sets me apart is my unique blend of expertise in technology and cosmetics, which allows me to approach hairstyling with an innovative perspective. I’m most proud of the vibrant community we’re building at Technicolor Education, where creativity knows no bounds and learning is a colorful journey.
Potential clients, followers, and fans should know that I’m committed to pushing the envelope of hairstyling, challenging norms, and fostering a supportive environment for growth. My brand stands for education that’s as vibrant as it is valuable – where every stylist can explore, learn, and create with confidence.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
While my journey revolves around creativity, there’s a fascinating aspect that non-creatives might find eye-opening: the intricate world of hair science.
Beyond aesthetics, hairstyling combines artistic vision with scientific mastery. Hair isn’t just a canvas; it’s a complex structure with its own chemistry and biology. Achieving a striking style involves understanding hair’s properties, how it reacts to treatments, and the precise chemistry behind color transformations.
Hair science isn’t just about products and methods; it’s also about decoding each client’s hair history, health, and preferences. This detective work ensures that every style isn’t just beautiful, but also tailored to their individual needs.
So, whether you’re a fellow creative or drawn to science, recognizing this blend of artistry and precision in hairstyling can offer fresh insight into the depth and skill behind each transformation.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Absolutely, reflecting on my creative journey, there are indeed resources that I wish I had known about earlier. These insights could have accelerated my growth and enriched my experiences.
– I wish I had discovered comprehensive platforms that seamlessly blend art and science, offering in-depth knowledge on hair health, techniques, and the latest industry innovations. These platforms would have bridged the gap between creativity and practicality from the get-go.
– Earlier access to detailed resources on the chemistry of hair and its response to different treatments would have greatly enhanced my decision-making in hairstyling. Understanding how various products interact with hair could have refined my techniques sooner.
– Early knowledge about branding, marketing, and business strategies tailored to the beauty industry could have expedited my career growth. Understanding how to showcase my unique approach could have attracted the right audience sooner.
– Discovering online communities or platforms dedicated to creative professionals could have provided valuable connections, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities. These connections amplify growth and learning through shared experiences.
In essence, having these resources earlier would have not only accelerated my growth but also empowered me to provide even better experiences for clients. However, I believe that each step of my journey, even the challenges, has contributed to my unique approach today, ensuring that I continue to push boundaries and evolve in this dynamic field.
