We recently connected with Tessa Markle and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tessa, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
My career path is not exactly traditional and certainly not linear. While supported by my representation team, my acting career is in my own hands. I run a film production company and podcast with my incredible business partner, but again, it’s all up to us. The arts are inherently risky. You never know when your next gig is coming unless you’re creating it for yourself, and even then, you have no idea if you will be a success.
But taking risks is the only way TO succeed in the arts. Ask for favors. Ask for money. Make that movie. Do the scary thing. The more reasonable risks you take, the more opportunities arise. I have learned so, SO much from just jumping in and going for it!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in the small town of Scottdale, Pennsylvania where I discovered my love of acting at my local community theatre, the Geyer Performing Arts Center. After constant involvement in the arts at my high school, Geibel Catholic, I moved on to pursue BA’s in theatre and psychology at Washington and Jefferson College. Upon moving to Los Angeles, California, I expanded my acting from theatre to film, television, commercial, and voiceover.
With a desire to create my own content, I co-founded Femme Regard Productions in 2018 with my business partner, Carolina Alvarez. We began making short films, expanded to co-hosting a weekly podcast about indie filmmaking – Femme Regard Podcast, and are currently producing and starring in our first feature length film, Sync.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For this question, I’d like to concentrate specifically on my production company, Femme Regard. We began connecting to our audience on the most popular social platforms at the time: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We’ve since expanded to TikTok and Linked In as well. We’ve found that posting regularly about our current endeavors, backstory, advice, and promoting friends’ work have been the most successful content.
We try to document our filmmaking journey as much as possible because people love an inside look with lots of pictures and videos!
Since beginning the podcast, our audience has a chance to hear more in-depth about our current projects, get advice from industry professionals, and connect to us as women in the industry.
We now have a monthly email newsletter with announcements and discounts as well as a Patreon that offers exclusive content for a monthly fee.
Between all of that content and connecting our audience to each other, we have broadened our reach and network immensely.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Carolina and I co-founded Femme Regard Productions in 2018. We first met in an acting class, where we got to see each others’ talent. From there, she brought me on to a web series she was working on, where we got to see each others’ work ethic. Because of that, it was a no brainer that we wanted to create content together. We quickly found that our film tastes, values, and morals all aligned in a way that would allow us to work together to produce content we are truly proud of and grow a successful company and brand.
